About Bil

I have had a life long love of math and science and have been fortunate to be able to apply my math skills in my engineering career. For 15 years I have been mentoring the Future Scientists and Engineering program at a Mission Viejo school. This program challenges students to apply basic math and science skills to solve simple real world problems. It is encouraging to see students take an interest in math and science and many have pursued engineering careers. I have been a volunteer math tutor for the city of Mission Viejo for the past four years.

I believe that math is a progressive learning endeavor. My objective is to present the current subject matter in a clear and concise manner by using both traditional and visual methods. I stress the relative importance of each lesion, and how it fits into the overall subject matter. I present why the lesion is important and give real world applications. I also show how the subject can help the student in follow-on math and science courses. I have found that this method stimulates student understanding and interest. Tutoring advanced math courses is improved by working on an ongoing basis with a student and being able to preview upcoming topics scheduled in the course.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
