With over 15 years of experience working with kindergarten through 8th grade students I have learned that every student has a different way of learning. With my experience in the classroom and one-on-one tutoring I have gained wisdom on the multitude of ways to reach children in their individual learning styles. Having worked in the classroom, I am able to work with any student’s teacher and their curriculum. Sometimes the classroom experience is not exactly what the child needs to thrive and that is where I excel.
Although I am capable of all subjects from K-8 my specialties are: Language Arts including reading, reading comprehension, and writing. In these subjects, my students excel with my ability to understand which teaching/learning method will help them succeed in understanding the material best. Spanish including English as a second language (ESL) since I was raised in a dual speaking family and continued my education in school and work.
Math is usually an area to improve upon when the student hasn't mastered the basics because every year builds on the previous year. I help my students master the basics while building confidence to tackle the more advanced math concepts. While working with students with learning disabilities my patience and creativity come into play especially when I see them struggling while learning the traditional ways. I have worked with all types of disabilities including: autism, ADD and ADHD, behavioral issues, and Oppositional Defiant Disorders. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
During my experience as an elementary school instructional aide, I worked with children in Kindergarten through 6th grade. I continue to tutor students at the elementary level and beyond. My students are able to master concepts both basic and increasingly difficult through thoughtful instruction and engaging one-on-one interaction. I recognize that one size does not fit all when it comes to learning. Therefore, my approach is tailored to fit the student, utilizing each individual's strengths.
I have prior experience tutoring students enrolled in Spanish courses at both high school and college levels. I have also taught conversational Spanish to adults seeking to improve their fluency. My students gain a better understanding of the language while increasing their proficiency. They come to value the benefits of utilizing Spanish as a second language in their professional environments as well as in their personal lives.
