About Bruce

I am a graduate of the University of North Texas with a BA in English Literature with a minor in Philosophy, graduating cum laude in 1991. I am also a graduate of the University of Dallas in Irving Texas with an MA in English. I graduated in 1995, writing my Master's thesis on Geoffrey Chaucer's "Troilus and Chriseyde."

I specialize in teaching poetry, English grammar and literature. In reading a work of linguistic art, I ask three questions: What insight into the human condition does this work offer to the reader? How does the artist accomplish this? and How does this insight and the means to express it relate to universal human experience?

Being a naturally curious person, I have read and studied books on psychology, on history, and on the nature of language. I enjoy reading novels, essays and poetry--reading both the classics and works by new and emerging poets and writers.

To supplement my academic focus, I draw on a variety of life experiences including involvement in accounting, manufacturing, healthcare and community service, serving the special needs of persons with behavioral and mental disabilities.

I am a calm, patient and tolerant person who loves to learn and to teach others how to learn.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Phonics

I have taken a course in my undergraduate studies about the functions of phonemes and other parts of sounds and how they bring sense to language and communication. I have taught young children and illiterate adults to read using this concept. As a result I have become an opponent of the "See and Say" method of learning language as wholly inadequate in that it relies on rote memorization and doesn't take into consideration the transferability of the concepts of sound and sense in language.

Study Skills

I am a graduate of the University of North Texas with a BA in English Literature with a minor in Philosophy. I have two years' experience in home schooling secondary and elementary school students. My methodology is to discover where the students interests lie and bring the subject to bear on the student's experiences. Then, I can teach the student the logical steps to gain knowledge in a way that fits the student's way of understanding. For example, if a student has a taxonomic way of understanding things--perhaps she is a sports card collector--I would introduce a more holistic approach to learning, teaching her to see overarching concepts and meaning of the subject at hand, not to dismiss, but rather to supplement her step-by-step, logical way of learning. Likewise, I would introduce a student of a more right-brain temperament the benefits of a more systematic way of gaining knowledge about a subject. The goal is to broaden a student's awareness of the different ways of obtaining knowledge about a subject, and guide her to the method that would most suit her way of thinking.
