California State University Northridge (English)
When students think of English, they probably just think about long texts and complicated words. I am here to show them that it is so much more than that! Academic English is the study of words and their use in greater texts like novels, short stories, poems, and other non-fiction pieces. It is also the language that we use to communicate with one another. My lessons will be designed to help the student not only improve their Academic English, but also the English that they use on a daily basis. The combination of these two things will help the student to succeed in the English classroom as well as in other classrooms and in the non-school world.
But enough about that. My name is Kayla and I am currently a Senior at Cal State University, Northridge. My academic success (a 3.5 GPA in all university coursework) comes in 2nd place because teaching is my first love. I am currently enrolled in a program that will award me a Bachelors of Arts for English and a Secondary Education Teaching Credential. I have spent many hours at different high school campuses observing the different methods of various teachers and learning about how students actually learn. The main lesson? No student has the same learning process as another. Each learns in their own way. This is why my tutoring will be effective, because each student of mine will have an individual assessment and lesson plan. No copy and paste used here! I hope to take the experiences I have tutoring and apply them to my future high school English classroom. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
