About Raymond

Math should be and can be a fun exciting subject! I believe every student has the capacity to learn. Too many times there is a one size fits all approach. Through personal interaction with the student I am able to provide an approach that uniquely addresses each student’s need in a way that will accelerate his grasp of the subject.

I have been tutoring and teaching grades K-12 for the last nine years. As a substitute teacher, I sympathize how overwhelming the fast pace classroom environment can be. Teachers don’t always have the time to explain all the steps they go through when doing a math problem. As I sit down with your child, we will move at a pace that will allow him or her to process the information that will make sense.

I thoroughly enjoy spending my time working with children and young teens when it comes to the subject of math. My sessions with students are typically fun because I often bring humor in to the discussion. Over the years, I’ve developed quite a repertoire of methods to approach most problems.

With my background as a teacher and a tutor for nine years, I look forward to hearing from you, to begin an exciting relationship that will meet your goals for this school year.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

In order to be a substitute teacher, I was required to pass the CBEST. The math portion included estimation, measurement, statistical principles math computation, numerical and graphic relationships area. I also passed the math portion of the CSET which included geometry and algebra. My nine years experience of teaching includes four years as a substitute teacher.

Algebra 2

Algebra II includes complex equations as well as new concepts such as logarithms, solving word problems and imaginary numbers. Because the concepts are unrelated, it is important that the student create and keep a “tool box” showing how the fundamental rules apply. Word problems present its own challenges. I found that the best way is to format the words into equations and go from there.

Geometry

Geometry is a subject that involves computation of two and three dimensional figures. Area, volume and perimeter calculations, understanding polynomials and relationships between points and lines are all required to master this branch of math. In addition, geometry contains a special set of rules that govern how to prove congruency of triangles. Before teaching math, I took and passed several advance tests. I also spent several years teaching geometry in a High School classroom.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry can be a confusing subject as it introduces new vocabulary words such as Sin, Cos and Tan and the Unit Circle. My first approach in teaching the Unit Circle is to use the Pythagorean Theorem to show how the numerical values are derived. I tell them to think of Sin someone “Standing” emphasizing this is the distance along the Y-axis and Cos as someone “ReClining” corresponding to the distance along the X-axis.
