The students who connect with my approach the most are those for whom foreign language does not come easy; that is how Spanish was for me.

Spanish was by far my most difficult course when I returned to college. Math and science were easiest for me to understand, but my techniques for success in those were not helpful with Spanish.

Spanish was by far my most difficult course when I returned to college. Math and science were easiest for me to understand, but my techniques for success in those were not helpful with Spanish.

A professor told me the best way to learn something is to teach it. So I trained as a CRLA II certified tutor to learn techniques I could apply to succeed with Spanish. I found what worked for me and, as a tutor, I help others find what works for them. My students encouraged me early on to pursue a second career in teaching, and so I completed a Masters in Spanish at San Jose State to qualify myself to teach Spanish at community colleges.

3 learning tracks that can be mixed and matched. The "Good Grade" program is for students mainly concerned about their letter-grade in class. The steady pace keeps the student a chapter ahead of the rest of the class, which eliminates surprises and the anxiety they can cause, and lets the student enjoy and get the most from their in-class practice time. In this program, learning study skills and test-taking strategies receive as much importance as the Spanish material itself. The "Focused Study" program is for students who set out to achieve a long-term goal, like becoming conversant or even fluent in Spanish. The four skill areas (Reading, Writing, Speaking, Understanding) are continually assessed, and the exercises and teaching methods are likewise adapted to assure that students feel they are progressing toward their long-term goal. This program is all about keeping motivated by setting short-term goals as a way of measuring progress. The "Traditional" program is the traditional tutoring arrangement, offering the advantage of spur-of-the-moment sessions in order to help the student get past a particularly difficult area. A good time to engage tutoring is once at the start of the semester and two weeks before a major test, final exam, or class project.
