Swarthmore College (History)
University of Wisconsin, Madison (PhD)
Hi! I am an experienced, credentialed teacher and private tutor with a passion for working with high school and college students to master and enjoy the mysteries of history – how to succeed in your history courses, including AP courses – as well as to conquer and succeed at standardized tests (ACT, SAT, SSAT, PSAT, HSPT, PLAN.) I also work with students on perfecting their writing skills. As both a classroom teacher and private tutor, I excel at discovering each student’s individual learning style and tailoring lessons to meet each student’s needs.
My degrees are from Swarthmore College (B.A.) and the University of Wisconsin, Madison (M.A. and Ph.D. in American History) and I have over 15 years of experience teaching in high school and community college. My success rate in raising students’ grades and achieving top AP scores is high. Trained by leading test prep companies, I have been tutoring test prep for over ten years, and my students are delighted with the considerable improvement in their scores.
My greatest joy is working one on one with students and discovering how they learn and what resources, from my vast supply (which even includes plush creatures to illustrate how the Bubonic Plague was spread!), will work best to make the subject fun and understandable for them.
On a personal note, I am married and my son just graduated from the University of Chicago Law School. I live in Mill Valley with my husband and our Siberian cat, Katya.
I look forward to working with you!
Trained by two top test prep companies, I've been tutoring the "verbal" portions of the SAT, ACT, and SSAT exams for over 10 years. I am as familiar as anyone can be at this point with the major overhaul of the SAT and the new exam, which rolls out in October 2015 (PSAT) and March 2016 (SAT). I've developed my own training materials, and the success of my methods is evident in the vast improvement in my students' test scores. Thanks to work with me, students have been admitted to universities to which they were previously not qualified. I am skilled at figuring out each student's learning style and challenges and planning my lessons to fit those needs. I am also very caring and patient, and make each lesson fun and enjoyable. I truly am committed to each student's success!
With a Ph.D. in American history, I am deeply knowledgeable about U.S. and European history, and I bring to each student a vast grasp and understanding of content as well as the historical thinking and writing skills so necessary to succeed in history courses, in high school or college. I have over 15 years experience as a classroom teacher in high school and community college, including 10 years teaching AP U.S. History and AP European History. I hold a lifetime community college teaching credential in history, and I have passed the College Board Audit to teach AP U.S. and AP Euro. I am thus intimately familiar with the changes that both courses and exams have undergone and are currently undergoing. In my private tutoring in these subjects, I've been successful in training students for the new exam when their own classroom teachers failed to do so.
On a personal note, I have also been a participant in history myself. I am a veteran of the Civil Rights Movement (I was a Freedom Rider, and I later spent two years in the deep South working with local African-Americans to overcome the barriers to voting.)

Mimi is extremely knowledgeable in her field of history (she has a PHD!) and in what we have selected her for - AP European History. In addition to this, and of utmost importance - she knows how to teach! She is not only charming, she is thorough in her explanations, delivers it in a clear direct manner with concise communication, seems to warm up to anyone she encounters, has a great deal of enthusiasm which is inspiring, can get down to basics very quickly, assesses the situation, is fair in her rate structure, doesn't waste a second of time and we are extremely pleased. She interacts to create a fun learning environment. We have only had two sessions, but my high school sophomore daughter is already pleased with the progress they are making, which will carry over into other subjects in terms of balancing time and what to focus on with the vast amount of material to cover. (Note I have a very bright child who is over booked and over worked, yet Mimi knew exactly how to work with her and to meet the challenge!) Our goal is to successfully complete AP Euro History prepared for the exam next May with the highest grade possible in the course and we think Mimi will have no trouble getting us there, if we stick to her plan. We have signed up for weekly tutoring sessions. I met with a couple of other tutors and spoke to several on the phone. Without a doubt Mimi was the best suited and most experienced in teaching kids and has the skill, knowledge and passion to do so. I would imagine she would be a success with a broad age range and skill set just given her obvious capabilities as an excellent teacher.
Mimi is helping my daughter with Honors US History, she is in junior year. She is an accomplished educator and we look forward to more lessons.
Mimi is a true find. She is helping my daughter develop the research and executive functioning skills to tackle her high school history projects/research papers. They started with brainstorming, developing a direction for finding sources, reviewing the sources and determining which ones to focus on.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have developed my own training materials.
I've been successfully tutoring ACT Reading for over 10 years. Trained by two of the top prep companies on the West Coast, I have helped students significantly raise their scores in ACT Reading. For many students this has meant qualifying for admission to universities to which they previously did not qualify. I have developed a portfolio of my own teaching materials that make the lessons fun and engaging, while imparting valuable skills.
I hold an M.A. and Ph.D. in American History from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, which, at the time, had one of the finest American History departments in the country. I have been successfully teaching American history at the high school and community college levels for over 15 years, and have developed a considerable collection of materials to enliven my lessons. I've taught AP U.S. History for 10 years, and have successfully passed the College Board's Audit. My students' pass rate on the AP exam is excellent. I am also well versed in the new requirements and challenges of the newly revised AP U.S. History course and exam.
I have been teaching high school economics for the past 8 years. My course is rigorous and also relevant to the students' lives; they have fun working through my interactive lessons while becoming well-informed citizens who will soon vote. I have taken numerous courses and seminars with the California Council on Economic Education, and at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco.
In addition to privately tutoring high school economics, I have also assisted students preparing for the AP Micro- and AP Macro-economics exams.
I majored in History as an undergraduate, andI hold a lifetime community college teaching credential in history. I have been successfully teaching European history at the high school level for over 10 years, and have developed a considerable collection of materials to enliven my lessons. Alongside high-school-level European history, I've taught AP European History for 10 years, and have successfully passed the College Board's Audit. My students' pass rate on the AP exam is excellent. I am also well versed in the new requirements and challenges of the newly revised AP European History course and exam.
I have been teaching U.S. Government and Politics to 12th graders for the past 8 years (this will be my 9th.) As a trained American historian, I am passionate about teaching my students to understand how the U.S. government assumed the form it has, and how the government works, so that they can become well-informed and engaged citizens who vote. They also learn to think critically about media and to interpret political cartoons. I have a substantial collection of materials and interactive lessons to make the subject fun and graspable.
Trained by two top prep companies, I have been successfully tutoring, and raising the scores of, students in SAT Reading for the past 10 years.
I have developed a portfolio of my own teaching materials, which includes many samples of top scoring essays written by my students.
