About Sara

I am an educator who begins working with each student precisely where they are currently at, and from there growth and expansion happens. We collaborate together in regards to your goals.

My name is Sara B. For over 15 years, I have been tutoring students of all ages (inclusive of Middle School, High School, College, Post Graduate, and working professionals) with Writing and Public Speaking. Working as a Marketing and Management profession, I was called upon to be a trainer, teacher, mentor and educator in every position I held. A partial list of subjects taught: creativity and innovation in Business, written and verbal communication improvement, Conversational English and Business English improvement.

Both Middle School and High School students work with me on the English sections of the SAT: Reading and Writing. Tactics and strategies are taught and practiced in order to help strengthen SAT English section scores. Students work on practice tests and essay prompts. Incorrect answers are gone over with thorough explanations. After the SAT, help in writing college application essays offered.

As well, I have been teaching ESL/ESOL for over 15 years to students ranging in age from 5 to 85. Students have had success with improving - sometimes vastly improving - their SAT Reading and Writing scores, Conversational English, Grammar, Business Communications, Essay Writing, Public Speaking and more.

I will happily provide references so you can speak to students who I currently tutor or who have been tutored.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

My best,
Sara B.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

Having worked Worldwide in Marketing with a concentration in Business Development, Sales, PR, Promotions, Events and more, I can help you with business topics ranging from marketing plans to strategic objectives & goals to customer service to database management and basic statistics, to name a few. My client range includes Fortune 100 and Fortune 500 to a 5 person operation and everything in between. I can help you understand how retail, wholesale, entertainment, government, insurance, financial, travel, communications, education & international companies operate and succeed, in any economy. Discover how to pay meticulous attention to business objectives, database analyses, budget, time and people management.

Career Development

Having been both on staff and serviced clients at Fortune 500 companies as well as being an entrepreneur since 2001, I have developed and re-developed my own personal career and helped many others. My methods are primarily based on being a teacher/group leader at various companies in-house training programs as well as their outside recruitment efforts. Literally thousands of resumes have come across my desk over the past two decades. Ask me about my proven recipe for successful interviewing, targeting companies and prospects, knowing strengths and weaknesses, resume & introduction letter writing, public speaking and how to conduct yourself in a job interview.

English

I have been working with students who wish to both speak and write using proper American English grammar for over 15 years and they get results. I use an award winning grammar book as well as individualized techniques that best suit each student and their goals. Reading is essential to improving both writing and speaking. They all work together and I have taught students from over 20 countries how to improve all 3 skills.

ESL/ESOL

My success with teaching ESL to students ages 5-85 spans 15+ years, with students originated from over 30 countries in 4 continents. My approach is to use the right textbook (based on a student's current level of English) as well as engaging conversation and real life situations such as role playing. I help students improve in their studies and business people improve in their business communications. I introduce younger students to English for the first time and help advanced ESL students fine tune their skills.

General Computer

I have been working on both PC and MAC computers since 1986. I am effective and efficient in helping any one of any age in setting up a brand new computer, getting started with new programs such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as creating settings. I am proficient at setting up email and email servers for computer users. My skills are also strong for setting up address books, calendars, syncing devices such as an iPhone or Android to a PC or MAC as well as setting up popular social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn.

Grammar

I have been working with students who wish to both speak and write using correct grammar for over 15 years and they get positive tangible results. I use some of the best grammar books available as well as individualized techniques that best suit each student and their goals. I would be happy to work with you on either spoken grammar, written grammar, or both. Letʻs talk.

Macintosh

I have worked on Macintosh computers since 1986. Currently I work on both a MacBook Pro and and an iMac. I am highly proficient with Mac for Word, Excel and Powerpoint as well as Garage Band, Keynote, iCal, Now Contacts, iTunes, iChat, iPhoto, and iMovie. I can help with syncing a MAC to an iPhone or Blackberry as well as syncing iPods.

I can help students who purchased their first MAC as well as students who have owned and worked with a MAC for 10 or more years. I have been trained by Apple's One-to'One team for over 6 years on over 10 applications. I can help create systems for file folders (making them color coded and easy to locate and use). My MAC skills are a 9 on a scale of 1-10.

Marketing

My marketing skills span 20+ years and include upper management positions at: Young & Rubicam: NY, IBM's in-house Marketing Department, Gannett, Western International Media and being a marketing consultant for 10+ years working with over 20 companies. My strength is in the use of how and when to use a myriad of marketing tools and how it coordinates with sales, public relations, direct response, online, website, promotions and events. I have worked in every facet of marketing, particularly in service industries.
I am deft at creating Marketing Plans and implementing them and efficient at creating ROI formulas for determining Marketing Program effectiveness. I have a litmus test for determining if a Marketing Program is a viable option before implementing the program.

Public Speaking

I have delivered over 1,000 talks, speeches, and presentations to audiences sizes ranging from 2 to 2,000+. My training in Speaking Circles helps students to relax and learn the art of relaxed confidence and relational speaking that yields powerful results. My philosophy is that public speaking can be a fun and energizing experience once students get over the "hump" of any perceived limitations. If a student needs to prepare for a formal public speaking event or finds him or herself in a situation where suddenly they are in the spot light and need to speak to an audience, I help them to be quick and nimble and remain calm so as to be able to express thoughts and get points across.

SAT Reading

I help many students increase their SAT Reading score in the Evidence-Based Reading section of the SAT. This section consists of multiple choice questions for both Reading Comprehension and Writing and Language, which asks students to be an editor. Working together through practice tests and homework, students will sharpen their skills for: basing their answers on evidence from the text, how a word is being used in context, and interpreting data from charts, tables, and/or graphs.

SAT Writing

I help many students increase their SAT score in the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) section of the SAT. Working together, students learn how to show effectively that they can read and comprehend a passage and write an SAT essay analyzing the passage. They learn how to show that they read the passage carefully, present a clear and logical analysis, and use language precisely. Students learn and practice through homework how to support the author claims with: evidence such as facts or examples, reasoning to develop ideas and connect claims and evidence as well stylistic or persuasive elements, such as word choice or appeals to emotion, to add power to the ideas expressed.

Writing

My key areas include Essays, applications, reports, PowerPoint, critical writing, compare and contrast, creative writing, SAT Writing preparation, and much more. If there is a school assignment or project or any thing in the written form that you need help with, I can help. My specialties are thesis creation, setting up structure for logical sentence and paragraph flow, context in relation to the thesis (problem or question or clarification), grammar, formatting, creativity, word choice, evidence, analysis and reflection, theme and sub themes, title, topic sentences, and more. No matter what level you are and if you are a native English speaker or an ESL student, you will notice the difference when we work together to improve your writing.

Patient Tutor

Sara was a patient and helpful tutor for my son. She helped him with SAT prep in Reading and Writing. We don't have final scores back yet, but he's improved on practice tests quite a bit. Thank you Sara!
