About Alex

As a college student, I feel I can convey an excitement about math to other students, identify with their concerns, and speak to them in terms with which they can readily identify. When a teacher tells a student that math is fun, it generally doesn't resonate with the student as much as it would if one of their peers said exactly the same thing. That’s where I can really help; by providing patient tutoring in a more relatable context, the student is better able to absorb the material. The authoritarian atmosphere in most math classes often enhances the student’s aversion to algebra but I can help them in a more peer-to-peer setting that is far more productive. I find that many students struggle with concepts because they’re uncomfortable asking for help in the classroom. Rather than missing a concept that must latter be built upon, I’d like to provide your student with the opportunity to freely discuss any areas where they need more clarification.

I am a college student, working toward a degree in math and computer science. I did independent study throughout high school and was awarded the Golden State Merit Award upon graduation. When students ask “what do I need to know this for?” I like to use my computer experience to demonstrate how video games are largely a well choreographed group of algebraic processes. They may never want to write a video game, but this real world example shows how powerful algebra is and, to a young person, means so much more than “because it’s on the test”.

I have tutored algebra to both high school and college students on one-on-one and small group settings. My hours are very flexible and I’m available for tutoring around Cobb Mountain, Middletown, Hidden Valley, Lower Lake and Clearlake. Hidden Valley residents will need to call the security gate before the appointment so that they know to expect me.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
