I have been involved in education since my university graduation; first as an elementary teacher, then as a parent volunteer and student tutor. I was fortunate to be involved at the state and national levels in curriculum and textbook development, as the President of the California State Board of Education in Sacramento and as a Director of the National Association of the State Boards of Education in Washington D.C.
The education of students is clearly a passion I have sustained these many years. It is exciting to witness the development and creativity of young minds. Tutoring, I believe, is a shared endeavor for the parents, the student and the tutor, in communicating goals and objectives and in gaining the respect needed to make each session a wonderful learning experience.
The details of the tutoring sessions will be scheduled and adapted to accommodate the student's school schedule and the parent's work schedule. I look forward to meeting the student and his/her parents and to achieving desirable goals for all involved. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am an artist and have taken many private lessons in drawing and painting. I have displayed my work in a gallery and have sold paintings. I enjoy working with students, watching them create from their imagination. using drawings, color and even story lines. There is never a criticism in drawing only encouragement.
I have been an elementary teacher in the states of Wisconsin, Maryland, Washington and California. I was instructed in the major elements of teaching and how those lessons still relate to today's current and modern technologies.
I am an artist and a painter using water colors, oils and acrylics on paper or canvas. I love color and this art form does teach a student to clearly see how one can change or enhance color by mixing paint colors, when possible. Many students do not realize that they have artistic ability because it is not stressed in school. It is a fun activity and worthwhile.
I have a minor in elementary education. Phonics was an important part of my four-year curriculum. After college, I taught in five elementary schools in different states, grades 1-3, teaching students to read using phonics. The results were very successful in producing students who became avid readers.
One of my majors in college was communication, including public speaking, writing and producing scripts. I was involved in public speaking, drama clubs, plays and declamation contests throughout my years as a teacher. Part of my curriculum was focusing on various public speaking agendas in my classrooms. At the open house for parents, the students introduced themselves and talked about their experiences in the classroom. The exercise was then done at the end of the school year so the parents could see the development of their children. It is an important skill to be learned for students to gain confidence, poise and to overcome shyness.
Part of my college curriculum included how to perfect study skills for elementary students during the school day and in independent study. I had a last period study skills class, at which time I would work with each individual student in teaching study skills while the rest of the class would work on assignments of the day. I understand the complexities of study skills and would teach those skills to the individual student. As a class assignment, we would discuss the goals and objectives of study skills every month. It is a skill a teacher must stress and teach, not only, for the classroom but to carry over in one's daily activities.
