About Jacob

I am an incredibly driven and hard working individual who will always hold myself to the highest standards possible. I am currently attending Stanford Medical School in pursuit of my M.D. with a B.S. in mechanical engineering from MIT. I achieved a 39 on the MCAT exam (top 99.7%), near and perfect scores on SAT II math, physics and chemistry exams, top SAT scores and have scored a 5 on all seven AP exams I took (BC Calculus, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Computer Science, U.S. History, and English Literature and Composition).

But enough about my qualifications, that doesn't make me a qualified tutor, my passion and love for teaching does! I have an absolute love for learning, that I take every opportunity to share with others. I worked as a ski instructor for 5 years with students of all abilities (beginner through advanced) and all ages (4 yrs - 65+). I have tutored middle school students in the Cambridge public school system as a volunteer, ran a personal tutoring service in High School north of Boston and tutored high school and college students throughout my undergrad years. I also worked as a volunteer baseball camp counselor for 4 years for children ages 7-14.

I believe the best learning is done on your own, struggling through a problem to the end. I will push students to think critically and independently. I want students to question what is being taught. With a mutual understanding of one another, students find it extremely easy to ask me questions about anything they do not understand. An intimidating tutor can never achieve results because they can never get to the root of a students problems. I work on the level of students and try to see things as they do, rather than lecturing from above. As a lifelong student, I know how easy it is to see when my teachers are not confident in their own answers - I am always honest and upfront with my students when I'm stuck, and we work together towards the answer. Learning how to be effective and efficient in finding answers for yourself is more important in this age of information than simply arriving at the "right" solution.

I am happy to work with students on application processes as well. Whether that be college applications or the premed process, I will work with students to help them achieve everything they are capable of. I would be thrilled to take students through all the preparation and studying required for MCAT and SAT tests including tutoring along the way. Though as a caveat, I'm knowledgeable in the format of the old MCAT exam, and not the new one.

I have a 2 hour cancellation policy basically just for traveling purposes, I'd be happy to reschedule for another time.

I have access to a number of public spaces at Stanford that are fantastic for tutoring and of course there are countless other public spaces I am happy to meet at. However I am also happy to meet with students at their homes.

I look forward to working with you, please don't be shy and contact with any questions. I can be incredibly flexible and absolutely willing to work with whatever needs you may have! Thanks!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Genetics

At MIT I completed a course designated "Introduction to Biology and Genetics" taught by Eric L. and Robert W., heads of the human genome project and world famous cancer researcher respectively. I have also taken a class at MIT which is a lab class focused on genetic lab techniques and theory. I am currently studying Mechanical Engineering and pre medicine at MIT.

MATLAB

I have completed a course at MIT designated "Computational Methods for Mechanical Engineers" which is based in the use and application of MATLAB. Additionally I utilized MATLAB to write simulation programs for Stryker Orthopedics that replaced software packages they previously used and were valued at over $40,000.

MCAT

I took the MCAT in January of 2014 received a total score of 39 with PS-14, VR-13, and BS-12 scores. I completed up through the equivalent of graduate levels of organic chemistry, two semesters of physics at MIT, two semesters of inorganic chemistry and two semesters of biology. The MCAT fundamentally teaches at a high school AP level of understanding and I received 5s on AP physics, bio, chemistry and English literature and composition. Having been through the study process I have a lot to offer in terms studying strategies beyond merely knowing the material.

Mechanical Engineering

I am a mechanical engineering student at MIT and I have completed all of my theoretical classes. The only curriculum I have remaining are practical lab classes in which I have extensive independent experience.

Organic Chemistry

I have completed up through the equivalent of graduate organic chemistry classes at MIT (2 semesters at MIT). I have received on average a B+ in these classes that have a standard curve centered at C+. I have additionally completed a laboratory chemistry class at MIT that teaches and utilizes organic chemistry theories.
