Middlebury College (Master's)
Bonjour! Voulez-vous parler français? My name is Emily and I have an M.A. in French from Middlebury College. I am passionate about French language and culture and enjoy sharing my passion with my students. I try to make my lessons as fun as possible through fresh and innovative teaching methods. I am also a mother of three children and have a special understanding of what it takes to engage children and get them excited about learning.
I graduated summa cum laude from Scripps College with a B.A. in French and Art History. I lived, studied, and worked in Paris for two years and speak with native fluency. I took courses at the Ecole du Louvre and the Sorbonne and lived with a French host family. I also worked at Sotheby’s in Paris, where I researched paintings in French and translated press releases and catalogues.
I am willing to work with elementary school children through AP/college level. I also help adult learners and students planning to go abroad for the first time get ready by working on travel specific vocabulary and phrases and sharing insight into cultural differences. I believe in a total immersion philosophy and like to incorporate music, poetry, literature, and film to help inspire and appeal to different learning styles. I can teach you grammar, writing, conversation, and literature. I am happy to work with students on an existing course and help with homework and preparing for upcoming tests.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I hold a B.A. in Art History and have written two theses on art historical subjects. I completed an academic internship at Sotheby's in Paris as part of my Master's program through Middlebury College. I have over six years of experience working in the art world, in galleries, auction houses, and consulting. I have also written about art and organized educational art tours and lectures.

I speak Spanish fluently and took many upper-division Spanish language and literature classes in college. My love of studying Spanish language started in high school, when I participated in an exchange program in Guadalajara, Mexico. I believe in a total immersion philosophy when tutoring in Spanish and like to incorporate music, poetry, literature, and film to help inspire and appeal to different learning styles.
