Hello! My name is Colby! I am a graduate of the California Institute of the Arts with a BFA in World Music in addition to an MFA in North Indian Classical Music. Being from a family of educators, musicians and engineers, I've always cherished helping people overcome hurdles they once thought impossible.
My journey into teaching began right after high school when I started instructing the percussion ensemble at my Alma Mater. I have since taught many high school percussion ensembles throughout Southern California for over a decade. I continued to improve my craft during my Masters Degree when I taught Tabla, World Music, and World Percussion for the Community Arts Partnership which offers college level arts education for free to children. I also served as a graduate level Teaching Assistant in the Herb Alpert School of Music during my time at CalArts. Since my time at CalArts, I have taught Southern California high school percussion ensembles and presented clinics for the Percussive Arts Society Day of Percussion in Lake Elsinore. I am comfortable mentoring all ages and ability levels. I have taught young kids all the way up to the elderly to play drums and percussion. I am also experienced in preparing percussionists for auditions for marching bands, drum corps, and colleges.
My approach to my lessons with my students is flexible. Because of my highly diverse training in a myriad of approaches to playing and practicing percussion, I have very keen ears that allow me to guide the lessons towards a deep understanding for the student.
I am easy to reach, friendly, and flexible with my scheduling. You are welcome to ask any questions or contact me to schedule a lesson. Looking forward to meeting with you and being a part of your musical journey!
