About Michelle

My name is Michelle and I hold a cleared California Teaching Credential. I hold degrees in: Language and Literature; Math, Science, and Engineering; Social Sciences; Liberal Studies; Earth Systems Science and Policies; Instructional Science and Technologies.

When I am not teaching, I love to snowboard all over the world. I love backpacking through different states and spending as much time as possible in nature. I travel and explore and decompress by reading or SCUBA diving. My goals include reading a new book a week, visiting all of the major league baseball stadiums, and visiting every National Park.

I have passed and assisted others in passing the CBEST, CSETS, and RICA exams.

I have raised student tests scores to become among the highest in the district.

The majority of my students are English Language Learners with little to zero English words. I am able to teach them phonics with letter and sound recognition. Working with CVC words and then progressing to larger words including diphthongs.

Please feel free to contact me if you have questions regarding a specific topic, need more information, or simply would like to schedule a tutoring session. I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have taken several professional development courses and participated in workshops specializing in ADD/ADHD. I have also taken and passed multiple courses in education pertaining to ADD/ADHD. I have read and studied several books pertaining to ADD/ADHD to help the performance of the ADD/ADHD students in my class. I have had the opportunity to teach 25 ADD/ADHD students in my own self contained classroom. Each student has developed and succeeded into the next grade level with ease.

I have successfully tutored a student who qualified through California State University Monterey Bay as having Aspergers. From October through December, I tutored the student in two subjects which she was failing. She completed each course with an 82 percent or higher. The student qualified as being fully disabled through the University disability Act. We worked together (The student and I) to come up with a style which benefited her at her highest capacity. Through communication, face to face interaction, and constant praise, the student benefited greatly. We will continue our work together during her graduate studies.

I have participated in several seminars, professional developments, workshops, and read multiple books on teaching students with autism. In addition to studying and learning about working with autistic students, I have had the privilege of teaching three students in my own class. My students have all succeeded and have gone on to pass not only my grade but the next three as well. I currently tutor a severely low functioning autistic junior high student. He is currently on grade level.

I am qualified to tutor people interested in taking the CBEST exam because I have studied for the exam and passed the exam myself on the first try. I have also taken and passed the CSETS and RICA exams as well on the first attempt even while taking all of the CSETS in one sitting which I highly recommend doing.

I love the clarinet. I started playing in the 3rd grade and continued on throughout college. At the junior high level, I was competing at college level competitions and even played on a CD. I have competed and won competitions at UOP and Sac State. I have played in concert bands, wind ensembles, jazz bands, marching bands, and pep bands. Although I usually sat first chair, I prefer playing the music of 3rd clarinet for the deeper notes.

Common Core

I currently have been teaching the Common Core curriculum the last five years. We have switched curriculum and thus I have had the opportunity to see several different curriculum in our district all Common Core based.

Computer Science

I have a masters of science degree in computer science from California State University of Monterey Bay. I have used my degree to build educational programs since obtaining the degree in 2013.

Elementary (K-6th)

I feel I am qualified for tutoring Elementary (K-6th) because I hold a clear California Teaching Credential. I have taught Kindergarten, Third Grade, and a third/fourth combination class. I have taught for several years in two different elementary schools. I understand the curriculum in the local districts as I am currently teaching it myself and I understand what the teachers expect from their students.

I am a Certified GIS and GPS Trainer through Trimble. I have taken and passed the mapping and GIS Certified Training program and hold a certificate of completion.

I believe the best way to tutor handwriting is to work on proper ways to hold a pencil, proper ways to erase, and to practice. Tracing at first and then formatting letters on their own.

Hard Of Hearing

I have taken sign language in college for four semesters. I was also born hard of hearing and have learned sign language in order to talk with my friends and family. I currently am one of two people who sign on Sunday mornings at church.

I have successfully home-schooled family members and friends in a home-school co-op. I have developed curriculum based off of the common core being taught in school. I have developed and fun-raised field trips for the students and created educational trips. I have brought in guest speakers to educate and relate to the students with the material we were learning.

I am qualified to tutor MATLAB based on my experience. I have used MATLAB throughout my graduate courses in Quantitative Marine Science towards my degree in Computer Science and Technology.

Microsoft Windows

Microsoft Word is a program I learned well while in college. I write all of my papers in Word or open office. I have used Word for almost 25 years or so. It is a simple program but can be complicated for some who are not used to working on a computer.

With teaching and tutoring phonics my goal is to teach students to decode words by sounding them out or by blending the sounds together. I use a three step touch approach where the student taps their should, elbow, wrist for the sounds they hear in the word. By blending these sounds, we are then able to read the word. I work on phonemic awareness, phonemes and eventually graphemes. Taking an passing the RICA exam, proved my competence in this topic as the entire exam is based on phonics, reading, and how to teach the two.

Public Speaking

I took public speaking in college and even competed in a public speaking competition placing second under a Sacramento Kings cheerleader. I have defended my thesis in front of a filled auditorium and was the keynote speaker at my graduation. In addition, I have held several positions where I need to speak in large groups.

Sign Language

I was born hard of hearing and learned sign throughout my life. I tested out of my college requirement by signing to my deaf teacher in college. However, for the fun of it, I took three semesters of sign language in college for the credits. I currently sign for our church teaching the children song lyrics in sign language. I also teach my students the pledge of allegiance in ASL every year.

I believe I am qualified to tutor softball due to playing from the age of 5 through 27. I have played second base and center field the majority of my years but have also played third base and other positions for a game or two.

This exam tests students to see if they are progressing throughout the year in four topics. Allowing parents, students and teachers to compare the students assessment to grade level learning. Tutoring for the STAAR is a fun way for me to help students review, master, and grow deeper in their understanding of the material. The STAAR exam is an exam I love administering each year. Students should not be nervous for the STAAR but should embrace the opportunity to show what they know well and what they need help with.

Study Skills

I am qualified to tutor study skills due to the fact that I teach study skills daily in my classroom. I am teaching individuals organization, what to study for exams and how to study. How to eliminate answers in multiple situations and how to perfect an essay question. I am able to tutor someone on how to manage their time and prepare for exams. I do this through highlighting, note taking, mental tricks for memorization, etc.
