Emma is an MIT alumna and mechanical EIT who has been teaching and tutoring for nearly a decade. She taught a course in linear algebra as part of MIT's High School Summer Program; worked as a science instructor at the Newman School in Boston; was invited to teach physics at the Boston College of Architecture; and has over a thousand hours of tutoring experience.
Emma tutors high school and undergraduate math and physics. Her most frequently requested subjects are Physics I (Mechanics) and all levels of Calculus. She also supports civil and mechanical engineering majors in core classes such as statics, dynamics, waves/vibrations, and finite element methods.
In addition to engineering-related classes, Emma has extensive experience tutoring discrete mathematics for computer science. Having studied abstract mathematics and computer science at MIT, she is well-versed in proof techniques (such as induction), number theory, graph theory, probability, and combinatorics.
When she is not tutoring, Emma runs a small business that makes and sells sheet metal furniture and lighting. She enjoys flying as a private pilot and restoring her vintage British car, a 1972 MGB GT.

I provide my highest level of recommendation to Emma as a math tutor. She helped me through the hardest class I have ever taken in my life. I had very little math experience prior to taking a very technical graduate program. I needed to take masters level calculus, probability, discrete math and statistics to complete my masters of science in computer information systems.
Emma has a way of explaining concepts so that they are much easier to understand than the way they are written on math textbooks. She takes the notation-heavy gibberish and translates it into understandable concepts that make it much more efficient to learn. Anytime I was confused about a subject I would take in my questions to her and she would be able to explain them in a way I would absorb. She is very knowledgeable in many disciplines. She was able to create practice questions that matched the format and difficulty level of the typical homework assignments. She is very reliable. She put a lot of effort into the lessons. She was very encouraging and she truly cared about my progress. With her help I was able to complete the program successfully.
My son was extremely happy to have found Emma. He said she knows how to explain the material in a way that clarifies any questions or doubts. Highly recommend her. He is looking forward to his next lesson
Emma was so helpful. She really knows the material and I am happy that she is able to help me with such difficult engineering problems.
Complete mastery of Mechanical Engineering concepts. Able to take complex concepts and simplify them for her students. Very patient and knowledgeable.
Emma was very helpful. She was attentive and insightful and she gave me clarification on a few things I needed to consider about my project. Her knowledge was great and she was quick to understand my issues. I'd recommend anybody who needs a good tutor to contact her. She's very good and pleasant.
She did a great job in explaining to me the depth of the subject and made it easy to understand. I now feel comfortable and confident that with her help, I can submit assignments on time with correct solutions. She is very knowledgeable and knows how to get the concept understood easily. I am happy to recommend her.
Very lucky for having Emma to help my son Hart. Emma is very knowledgeable and she is very patient. My son has improved his grade in his Calculus since Emma tutored him several times. Absolutely, Emma is helpful to my son. And we are happy to have her tutoring continue.
Emma tutored me for Statics and Strength of Materials last semester. She was always well-prepared, and I remember being continually amazed by her knowledge and competence in the material. She knew how to solve all the problems without looking at them twice, and she would always guide me through the solution instead of simply throwing it at me. She was also incredibly patient and took the time to answer all my questions. She truly cares for her students and wants them to succeed. I would highly recommend her for math, science, and other related subjects.
Typically I have always been strong in Math and Science. However, since enrolling in my Master's Degree, I have found that I am struggling to remember the material after years without practice. I began to fall behind in the material and so I sought tutoring. The first several tutors we not very helpful. Not only were they hard to reach and schedule, they did not know the material any better than I did. Imagine my discouragement. Eventually, a fortunate turn of events put me in contact with Emma and she was the best by far. Emma is the most responsive and easiest tutor to work with. She is able to explain the concepts in ways that are easy to understand and follow along with. Emma does not simply explain the process and move on, she helps you to work through the process yourself to ensure that you understand. Additionally, I was asked for the material I was studying ahead of time. Emma then reviewed the material and ensured that she met me with a full understanding of what I was working on. Even after the sessions, she would e-,mail me with more material to further explain any questions that I struggled on. Emma truly takes it to the next level with a care and effort that is not commonly found in today's society.
Emma took the time and patience to help me overcome my difficulties in Linear Algebra. She is precise, organized, and very helpful!
Emma did an excellent job at helping my son prepare for the SAT Math II. With her guidance and his hard work, he scored perfect 800 marks!
Emma came to the session well prepared and broke down complex concepts and made me understand and know how to solve all kinds of problems. I recommend for any engineering class.
Emma did a fantastic job at breaking different problems down. She wouldn't hesitate for a second to jump up and draw out the problem for me while talking me through each step. She allowed me to understand the bigger picture so that smaller details didn't seem so intimidating anymore. She did a fantastic job at helping me prepare for my physics midterm, which I went into feeling very confident thanks to Emma. I highly recommend her!!
Emma has been very helpful. She explains the concepts well and is patient. She is easy to understand and breaks down the questions into steps that I can follow and practice more. She also provides useful websites to facilitate my learning.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Emma regularly tutors Calculus I, II, and III (multivariable) at Santa Monica College and USC. She has helped several adult students regain fundamental math skills and return to school for advanced degrees. She also tutors AP Calculus AB and BC.
Emma holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from MIT and is a certified Mechanical EIT (Engineer In Training). She has years of experience supporting civil engineering majors at Northeastern University, where she regularly tutored statics, strength of materials, structural analysis, and finite element methods.
