About Emma

Emma is an MIT alumna and mechanical EIT who has been teaching and tutoring for nearly a decade. She taught a course in linear algebra as part of MIT's High School Summer Program; worked as a science instructor at the Newman School in Boston; was invited to teach physics at the Boston College of Architecture; and has over a thousand hours of tutoring experience.

Emma tutors high school and undergraduate math and physics. Her most frequently requested subjects are Physics I (Mechanics) and all levels of Calculus. She also tutors mechanical engineering classes such as statics, dynamics, waves/vibrations, continuum mechanics, structural analysis, and finite element methods.

In addition to engineering-related classes, Emma has extensive experience tutoring discrete mathematics for computer science. Having studied abstract mathematics and computer science at MIT, she is well-versed in proof techniques like induction, graph theory, number theory, probability, and combinatorics.

When she is not tutoring, Emma runs a small business that makes and sells furnishings. She enjoys flying as a private pilot and restoring her vintage British car, a 1972 MGB GT.

All tutoring takes place in east Manhattan Beach. Please inquire for exact location.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

Emma regularly tutors Calculus I, II, and III (multivariable). She has helped several adult students regain fundamental math skills and return to school for advanced degrees. She also tutors AP Calculus AB and BC.

Civil Engineering

Emma holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from MIT and is a certified Mechanical EIT (Engineer In Training). She has years of experience supporting civil engineering majors at Northeastern University, where she regularly tutored statics, strength of materials, structural analysis, and finite element methods.

Discrete Math

Emma studied discrete math at MIT, where she earned a Minor in Mathematics. She regularly tutors CSCI 170 at USC. She is familiar with logic theory, proof techniques (e.g. induction, well-ordering), number theory, graph theory, probability, and combinatorics.

Mechanical Engineering

Emma is a certified Mechanical EIT (Engineer In Training) who has tutored many mechanical engineering subjects, such as statics, dynamics, waves/vibrations, structural mechanics, and finite element methods.

Physics

Emma tutors high school AP Physics and undergraduate Physics I. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from MIT and is a certified Mechanical EIT (Engineer In Training). She can help you understand Newton's Laws, projectile and rotational motion, conservation of energy and momentum, and much more. Her style of teaching is visual, non-pedantic, and relevant to engineering applications and everyday experiences.

Outstanding tutor

I provide my highest level of recommendation to Emma as a math tutor. She helped me through the hardest class I have ever taken in my life. I had very little math experience prior to taking a very technical graduate program. I needed to take masters level calculus, probability, discrete math and statistics to complete my masters of science in computer information systems. Emma has a way of explai
