About Leah

Tutoring Spanish and English is the perfect way to combine my love of teaching with my enjoyment of language learning.

Having taught students of all ages for 15+ years, I can definitely say that I bring both passion and experience to the table. During college, I studied "filología hispánica" (Spanish language and literature) for one year in Granada and Oviedo, Spain and graduated with a double major in vocal music and Spanish.

I then decided to combine my love of teaching with my other love for travel! I lived in Barcelona where I taught English for two years and became fluent in Spanish, while also developing as a singer in the local music scene.

Over the past 10 years, I have taught ESL (English as a Second Language) through Drama at the International High School in Brooklyn, New York, and Spanish levels 1-4 at the Windward School in Los Angeles, California.

I have tutored several private students of all ages in language development, academic support, Spanish and/or English language development and test preparation. One of my students even raised her SAT II Spanish Subject Test score from a 450 to a 700! Now that's improvement!

My priority with private students is to quickly assess and focus on areas of need, while making content more understandable, accessible and enjoyable. I help high achievers, reach even higher, and struggling students feel at ease. By the end of a single session, my students have a clear idea of what they have learned by building upon prior knowledge, learning new or difficult content and applying that knowledge.

By the end of our time together my students feel they have improved greatly in the four basic language skill areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking. They have all the tools necessary to achieve their goals, whether they want to grasp grammar basics, write a class essay or get that high score on the SAT II Spanish Subject Test or TOEFL. With me you can learn, achieve and enjoy at the same time!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have the following credentials: Master's Degree in Education (TESOL); Bachelor's Degree in Spanish Languages and Literatures & Vocal Music; California Clear teaching certification in Spanish and ELD (English Language Development); over ten years of English as a Second/Foreign Language teacher (EFL/ESL) for children to adults in Barcelona, Spain and New York City.

Spanish

I have the following credentials: BA in Spanish Languages and Literatures & Vocal Music
- MA in Education (TESOL); California Clear teaching certification in Spanish and ELD (English Language Development); part-time Spanish teacher at Windward School in Los Angeles, CA (2014 to 2015); fluent in Spanish; and I lived in Granada, Oviedo and Barcelona, Spain.

Theatre

I worked as a teacher of Drama at the International High School at Lafayette in Brooklyn, NY for six years. IHSL is a school that teaches the English language to second language learners through each content area. My drama curriculum is based on a traditional curriculum with a focus on English language acquisition, which, as many educator's will affirm, is simply an excellent approach to all language education.
