About Colleen

I hold a master’s degree in teaching, been a certified teacher and have enjoyed working with students for over 30 years. I adore elementary students because they get so excited when they finally understand something they have been struggling over. The children I prepare for Kindergarten begin their education with a sound understanding of the basics and a confidence and enjoyment for learning that brings future success. I identify why students are struggling with reading, then teach strategies that help that student. I believe in working and motivating students through positive behavior. My students enjoy their time with me and develop techniques that help them become independent learners.

The reason I became interested in teaching reading is because my daughter is Dyslexic. I was already a teacher, but witnessed the constant struggle to read. In eighth grade she was reading at a fourth grade level and struggling in many classes. I began homeschooling and continued through her high school years. She is now a senior at a major university with over a 3.5 average. I know I can help your child succeed. Time management and study skills are a weak point for many students. Most middle school children juggle between 2 to 4 hours of homework a night. They tend to waste time due to a lack of organizational skills. I work with your child to develop an individualized system that helps them use their study time efficiently.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Phonics

I have a Master's degree in Education and have taken college classes in elementary education specializing in reading strategies. I use a variety of methods including phonics, blends, and backing out of words to help struggling readers decode. We also work on correct pronunciation of syllables.

Reading

My family tends to move around, therefore, I have had the opportunity to teach in many states including, Connecticut, Ohio, Michigan, Nevada, and California. My reading instruction is based on a multisensory approach and I am versed in the Orton-Gillingham method. I also teach reading strategy techniques to help my students maximize their comprehension.

Sewing

Sewing was a hobby that turned into a job for a few years. My daughter was a figure skater. I made all her competition costumes which included making patterns and embellishing with crystals, beading, and trims. I've been employed commercially by dance studios for production costumes, a sail loft making boat cushions and covers, and privately producing patio cushions and custom sewing.

Spelling

Reading, phonics, spelling, writing, and grammar are all intertwined. I teach the basic spelling rules when teaching phonics and then continue with high frequency words for each grade level. This helps my students to focus on their thoughts when writing instead of struggling to spell each word.

Study Skills

In addition to my degree in education, I have been teaching study skills to athletes for many years. I also teach organization and time management skills so students can get the most productivity out of the time available for studying. I give specific attention to note taking and teach reading tips so students can acquire a full understanding of the material. I help students prepare for test taking, together we develop a system that works for them to be successful.

Vocabulary

In order to understand information and express oneself a command of the English vocabulary is imperative. I teach my students techniques to learn new vocabulary from their academic materials, as well as, challenge them to use new words while writing. Throughout the years, I have found my methods help students increase the complexity of their writing.

Very knowledgeable and patient!

Our son is over-active and has little patience to sit in one place. He always finds excuse to not sit and learn. After several sessions with Colleen, he is now able to listen and read at a much higher level than before! Thank you so much for your patience and teachings!
