University of California- Santa Barbara (Biology)
Hey there, my name is Dave, and what I want to say first and foremost is that I have always had a passion for teaching. There's nothing more rewarding than seeing a student's eyes light up when they finally understand a new concept. "AH-HA" moments are what I live for!
Several years ago, I began tutoring as a college student at the University of California Santa Barbara. It was there that I started helping my friends and classmates with their studies. In the process, I discovered that I had a gift for explaining abstract concepts such as organic chemistry, physics, and biology. If only I had a nickel for every time a friend has said, 'Your so smart!'
Since coming home from college, I've mainly focused on helping students with mathematics and science. I'm especially strong in the areas of Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Trigonometry, and Calculus. I'm also quite good with high school and college level Chemistry... In the last few years alone, I've tutored 2500+ hours and have netted close to $70,000 in earnings. So if experience is something you're looking for, I've definitely got plenty of it!
Currently based on my ratings, I'm in the top 5 out of more than 100+ Wyzant tutors located in the South Bay (i.e. 25 mile radius of 95032 as of 9/13/2014). So if you're looking for that 1 tutor in 20 at a reasonable rate, I'm the guy the for the job!
(Please Note: East or North San Jose or Palo Alto are too far for me to drive.)
So you might ask how I gained my academic foundation. Well, I was extremely fortunate to be blessed with two wonderful, loving parents. My mother is a retired English and French teacher, while my father is an electrical engineer. Both of them attended Stanford University and graduated with Master's degrees. With amazing parents like this I was fortunate enough to have two outstanding and inspirational resources to draw upon as a child. Growing up I accepted nothing but the best. As a student at Leigh High School I received a 4.2 GPA. As a college student at UCSB, I received a 3.67 GPA, narrowly missing Cum Laude Honors.
As of now I am pursuing entrepreneurial ventures on the side in hopes of striking it big with products that reverse tooth decay and hair loss (I know, far-fetched, but true). So if you're interested in your child starting their own charity, website, or anything of the like, I could definitely provide some major assistance...
So what makes a great tutor?
1. Experience, Experience, Experience (You don't know it until you've taught it 10-20 times!)
2. Energy and Enthusiasm (Keeping kids engaged is something I specialize in!)
3. The Ability to Use Metaphors and Tailor Your Explanations to the Student at Hand
4. A Great Outlook on Life and the Use of Humor (It's okay to crack a joke every once in awhile! Don't Worry I keep it PG)
5. Being Fascinated with the World and Wanting to Know How Everything Works
If you've read this far, congratulations! So what are you waiting for? Send me a message and I'll get back to you within a few short hours...Can't wait to hear from you! I am a first year Bio-Chem Major at Santa Clara University. Dave helped me secure an A in my Precalculus class and a B in my Chemistry 11 (1st year general chemistry) class. He is very easy to work with and very intelligent. An excellent tutor!
Algebra and geometry revision before school begins. It was very helpful and good to get a start on the course.
David has been consistently on time and communicates easily by email or text with my son. My son enjoys working with him and has found David helpful to keep him on track and keep up with a challenging class.
David has been tutoring me for college intermediate algebra, which I desperately needed due to the fact that math has always been my weakest subject. He is a very friendly and knowledgeable tutor who clearly knows his stuff and always comes prepared for your lessons. He seems to be a very busy and in demand tutor, but he is always willing to work you into his schedule at a time that is convenient for you. He is also very good at communicating via text or email with quick response times. I would definitely recommend him to anyone who struggles with math and needs the help of tutor who is always willing to give you as much help as you require to succeed.
David has been an excellent find and has been a wonderful tutor for my son. He is exceedingly patient and goes above and beyond with each of his lessons. I highly recommend David and am very happy to work with him!
David has simply been great! He's 100% devoted to giving you the best experience 100% of the time. Last semester my Physics mechanics class was kicking my butt. Still, with David's help I somehow managed to actually get a B+. Can you say GPA booster! The semester before he also did a great job helping me pass my Chem 1A class with a B. David's not perfect, he does have to reference things from time to time; nonetheless he never game up and would have any questions answered by the next tutoring session.
My son was studying for his high school chemistry final and was having an awful time trying to grasp it. It was stressful since if he bombed the final he wouldn't pass the class. Last minute we decided to find a tutor. What luck, David was available. He was able in a short time to help my son enough to make it possible to pass the final. What a relief. Thank you David.
The commitment, caring and positive reinforcement given by David made a difference for our daughter. Her confidence level and academic skills have both improved greatly.
David has been extremely helpful in preparing my son for both the SAT and his college applications. His charisma and personality really give him a leg up on other tutors. Many tutors out there seem as though they only care about money. The opposite is true with David. His primary concern was always giving the best lesson possible. I was quite stunned when he even offered to give a lesson free of charge, all because he was unsure how well he had taught a particular lesson. According to my son, the lesson was perfectly fine. Its no wonder why he comes highly recommended, he is not only effective, but also modest and conscientious.
David has been great in explaining complex concepts in Algebra 2/Trig to our daughter. Our daughter was especially impressed by the fact that David doesn't just go over the facts. He helps you understand the logic behind the facts, which makes it so much easier to understand the whole picture. David definitely knows how to connect to his students and keep them engaged. We are very happy we found him!
David is flexible, patient and effective!
David has been a tremendous help to my son in helping him study and understand the concepts in his physics class. As a result, my son's grade has gone from a C- to a solid B. He even scored his first A on test which he would normally struggle.
Excellent tutor, highly recommended. He is worth every penny!
Dave is an excellent resource for Math tutoring. You can be assured that an hour spent with David
will not be wasted on exploratory time between student and tutor. David comes prepared and very
capable. I know that every minute spent is valuable time my student is mastering math skills.
I feel confident that my high schooler will find this semester more enjoyable and beneficial with David's help.
I sought out David's help because my daughter was thrown into geometry after transferring schools this year. She had no clue what to do and I considered holding her back in Algebra. Within a few sessions I was seeing great results. My daughter went from getting 0's on her first few tests to passing with ease. Going from F's to C's, B's, and A's was a pleasant surprise and I am extremely grateful I found David. I can only describe him as courteous, punctual, and enthusiastic. I would highly recommend him to anyone seeking a tutor for their child.
David did an excellent job with my daughter. He helped my daughter write a paper for her English class, he gave her helpful ideas on how to look up words to increase her vocabulary to help make her paper better. He helped her organize her thoughts so she was could get them down on paper. My daughter gets very overwhelmed and shuts down. David was able to come along side my daughter and aid her in completing her assignment. He was very pleasant and a good fit for my daughter. He may be young, yet seem had enough experience and was able to help her complete her assignment in only 2 hours. Sometimes someone younger can makes a better connection with teenagers.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Every student deserves a solid foundation in Algebra 1. This subject is crucial for future academic success. Over the years I have handled dozens of Algebra 1 students and each time I have successfully helped them improve their grades and significantly increased their overall comprehension. Algebra 1 is pretty tedious and demands a lot of attention to detail. Unfortunately, having me there to do every problem can be quite costly over time. This is why I have recently started implementing the now famous Khan Academy into my lessons. I've found that this simple tool can turn a students life around. Using Khan Academy and other internet resources helps me produce maximum results in the minimum amount of time. Over the course of a year, I have not only caught students up to their expected math level, but in some cases gotten them more than six months ahead of their peers.
Over the years Algebra 2 has by far been the most requested subject that I have helped students with. For this reason, I have the most experience with this subject. I could literally teach it with my eyes closed. Like most subjects, I find that the best way to get students caught up to speed is by testing every single concept one could possibly conceive. With a subject like this, it's all about repeat exposure. Introduce the concept, do a problem, then review it later in the lesson. Repeat the process each lesson until the student finally goes AH HA! This concept is important, maybe I should remember it. Anyway, with enough lessons and effort on the students part, I guarantee you'll be seeing A's and B's on the report card where there were once C's and D's...
I have tons of experience teaching chemistry to high school, college level, and MCAT students. There's nothing more satisfying than hearing a student say, "Wow you made that a lot simpler than my teacher made it sound..." This is my goal with every Chemistry topic. Teach the bare essentials, otherwise the trees get lost in the forest. Don't get mixed up thoguh, throw me a curve ball, like "Why does the 4S subshell of chromium not fill up all the way before electrons are added to the 3D subshell," and its more than likely I'll be able to answer your question. Additionally, when requested, I provide students with essential audiobook Chem Lessons that can really help them get the edge...
Over the last few years, I have helped dozens of students regain their footing in Geometry. It has not been uncommon for students getting C's and D's to boost their grades up to A's and B's within 5 or 6 sessions. Geometry is simple, but the problem is many concepts build upon old ones. Students often get left behind, becoming disillusioned and giving up before they have even begun to learn anything. I offset this with my simple teaching style. I break down shapes, equations, and proofs into easy to understand pieces. Each lesson, my goal is to cover everything the student has learned the previous week. Then on top of that I try to introduce every concept the student will learn in the next coming week. This strategy has proven to be effective and given the chance can help your son or daughter excel right past his or her peers...
In a past life, I think I was physicist because I honestly love this subject more than any other. Its by far my favorite subject to teach! There's nothing more rewarding than showing a student how to implement the right equations in just the right ways. I first focus on teaching the conceptual aspects of the topic. Then I move on to the equations. The beginning of each session starts with an equation review (i.e. recollecting equations, recognizing their components, and how to use them in specific instances). I show students that it's all about having a plan of attack and recognizing how to implement units to your advantage. Finally, I provide students with supplementary material (i.e. problems, audiobook files, and books) that they can use to study more effectively in their own free time...
Precalculus is basically a more intensive version of Algebra 2. I often find students going AH-Ha within a few short lessons because everything they learned comes rushing back. This in turn allows them to pick up new concepts with ease because they can contrast it against things they've learned in the past. Whether it be graphs of polynomial functions, partial fractions, polar coordinates, parametric equations, series summation notation, limits, conic sections, or 2d and 3d vectors, I can teach it in a manner that is simple, straightforward, and easy to learn.
