Bio

I obtained my chemistry PhD from UCLA in June 2021. During my time at UCLA as a TA, I found my calling as an educator instead of a researcher. Being fully committed to education allows me to be 100% committed to my students long-term.

I've worked with over 527 students and 12 professors at UCLA. I have experience mentoring teenagers including children with Autism. I volunteered at an orphanage in Taiwan for 2 months teaching English to less privileged kids. Thanks to these experiences I...

Thanks to these experiences I developed a great understanding of how to motivate kids and communicate with them effectively.

I specialize in all chemistry subjects, but I am well-rounded and can also be your personal education consultant. My other strong subjects are math, physics, History, English, and Mandarin Chinese. I can help plan your summers, advise on what college courses to take, and help you prepare for college or graduate school admissions.

I am a good fit because I am approachable, creative, and effective. There are no dumb questions with me. I treat my students like my personal friends to make the lessons enjoyable, yet still maintaining a standard of excellence when I teach. If someone doesn't understand one explanation, I can come up with different approaches using various pictures, graphs, or videos.

In terms of teaching style, I'm all about efficiency. I am a systematic teacher and I make sure my students can achieve the most in the shortest amount of time. I make sure every hour I teach has decisive goals, and I help celebrate small victories along the way to help students gain interest/confidence. I also give students logical strategies to improve their decisiveness when they are studying or taking tests.

If you are ready to take your education to the next level, please contact me for a FREE 15 min consultation where we can design a personalized plan for you to feel like a ROCKSTAR at school! My parents both have PhD degrees. My father was a professor and my mother had a math tutoring school. Growing up in such a household I was groomed by these instructors to have systematic approaches to studying, and they sure did pass along many effective studying techniques. After I got into UCLA for both undergrad and doctorate programs, I continued to learn from the best academics in the world, further cementing my skills as a student as well as an instructor. Now that I am a full-time private educator, I have also started reading books specifically on education practices so I can continue to grow as an instructor.

I have 6 years of experience teaching college level chemistry and performing hands-on research at UCLA. Hence, I can teach anything such as AP/IB Chemistry, honors chemistry, and even advanced organic synthesis classes/labs. As a double Bruin, I think my academic track record speaks for itself. I know how to study and improve memorization. I am all about efficiency and enjoyment when I study or teach. Nobody likes to stay in all day studying if they don’t have to, so I have developed techniques and routines to maximize efficiency and minimize workload. My methods are 100% replicable for any student. Growing up, my friends always questioned how I can play basketball, learn guitar, and hang out with friends so often while acing my chemistry classes? It really is all about technique and efficiency. Hire me to ACE your chemistry classes and spend more time on the hobbies you love!

Excellent

Roy was helpful in explaining the concepts in a way that matches with the materials that I’m currently learning in my ochem course. I’ve got better score on my quiz after only one session which is great.

great explanations and very patient!

Roy has done an amazing job helping me general chemistry 2. He takes time to explain concepts and has helped me truly understand the material. My grade has improved in my class. I highly recommend scheduling a session with him!

Taylor, 13 lessons with Roy

Roy is a great mentor because he understand that everyone has different learning preferences. So he was very patience with me when I keep asking questions during my the session.

Roy is helping me with Alkyl halides: Nucleophillic Substitution and Elimination Reactions. I was so confused about which is the main product from the reaction, so he provided me with a table to help distinguishes between Sn1, E1 and Sn2, E2 process.
