Hi, I'm Kevin! I've been playing guitar for over 20 years, and I absolutely love to play and teach music! I graduated cum laude from Musicians Institute in 2016 with B.A. in Guitar Performance and the 2016 Outstanding Student Award. I worked at Musicians Institute as a teaching assistant until the campus temporarily closed its doors at the beginning of the quarantine. I also taught guitar and ukulele at The Los Angeles Conservatory of Music, and currently teach guitar and ukulele for a music instruction company called The Music Coaches. I'm also the music director and guitar player in my 90s alternative rock cover band. Between private lessons and my teaching assistant work at MI, I have well over a decade of teaching experience.

I love to help students develop their musicality and guitar playing. As an instructor, my job is to guide students on their musical journey. Whether students view music as a fun hobby or aspire to play professionally, my aim is to focus their attention on the methods of playing and practice that will enable them to accomplish their goals. While much of the learning process takes place outside of the classroom (the bandstand, the practice room, time away from music, etc), a music instructor's job is to shine a light on the path students must walk and equip them with the tools they need to flourish on their musical journey.

As a lifelong student and experienced instructor, I believe music education plays a vital role in the development of essential communication and critical thinking skills that students need in order to solve complex problems with empathy and intellect. Learning an instrument improves not only self-discipline, patience, and self-confidence, but also enables students to achieve immense personal growth. My goal is to make lessons informative, fun, and engaging so that my students develop not only a passion for music, but also the self-confidence and self-discipline they need to succeed in life, both on and off the bandstand.

Ear Training,

Ear Training

As a teaching assistant at Musicians Institute College of Contemporary Music, I tutored associate's and bachelors degree students in ear training of all levels. In one-on-one sessions, I taught students how to improve relative pitch by association. We used song examples as reference points to easily identify intervals, scale degrees, chords, etc. Bachelor degree students and I used the solfege system, while associates degree students and I used scale degrees to identify pitches.
General Music,

General Music

As a guitarist with a B.A. in Guitar Performance, I studied many different areas of music to complete my degree. Between Musicians Institute's associates and bachelors degree programs, I took 3 years of ear training, 3 years of music theory, 3 quarters of keyboard proficiency, over a year of arranging, a year of music history courses, 2 conducting courses, prepped and performed 2 separate juries, and also learned to play bass guitar and ukulele. The program was designed to ensure instrumentalists with specific focuses had a very comprehensive musical education. I graduated school not only a better guitar player, but also a better musician.
Guitar,

Guitar

I've been playing guitar for over 20 years now, and have a B.A. from Musicians Institute in Guitar Performance. I love to play in a wide variety of styles, and have a great deal of performance and recording experience through years of freelance gigs, various bands, and my work as a teaching assistant at Musicians Institute. I also have over 10 years of experience as a private lesson instructor, having worked for several music schools and taught independently as a freelance instructor.

Great teacher very patient

Great teacher offered a Lot of good solutions and material to help refine skills. He was able to help me improve my technique a little bit better and show me ways to get more consistent in my chord transitions.

Talented Teacher

Kevin has a full understanding of guitar. I am a fairly accomplished guitarist who has played for over fifty years and Kevin is helping me understand the theory behind the notes. Highly recommended.

Well skilled and thoughtful teacher

Kevin knows how to teach you what you want while at the same time preparing a foundation for you to expand upon. He has the bigger picture in mind and yet is attentive to the small details that make a world of difference. Your money will be well spent if you select him as a teacher/ tutor.

Excellent Guitar Teacher!

I am so happy to have found Kevin to teach my daughter guitar! She looks forward to her lessons with him. He is kind, patient and explains everything clearly to her. She says he is a great teacher who really pays attention to her. I really love that he provides feedback after every lesson and explains what was covered during the lesson. Thank you so much Kevin!

Thoughtful, knowledgeable, and adaptable tutor.

We started the lesson with the sheet music for a guitar-specific version of a Beetles song that Kevin prepared, and I am glad we were able to jump right in rather than any sort of protracted time for introductions and for me to try to tell him what I thought I already knew, as it all came out pretty quickly by demonstration. At around 45 minutes in, as I asked him some questions and the discussion of the parts of the first piece to work on were pretty much done, he threw together and posted a second song to help me focus on wrist technique as well. It was great that he was able to put that together on the spot.

Clear, knowledgable, patient teacher

Kevin was very present, took the time to answer questions, and helped me to feel more comfortable with the beginnings of learning to play an instrument. I gained understanding of different methods of strumming, frets, placement of fingers for chords, and began learning to play Stand By Me. I found Kevin to be clear in teaching and explaining, and patient.
