Hi - I'm Rob! I graduated last year from Sarah Lawrence College with a Bachelor's Degree in art history and concentration in architectural theory and design. Throughout my academic career, my most memorable classes (those which formed my interests and academic pursuits) were taught by professors who made learning an enjoyable experience and encouraged my growth as a student. I believe that in addition to teaching a student a subject, it is crucial to work alongside with them and try to find ways to make that subject as enjoyable and relatable to the student as possible. Considering that everyone learns differently, I often adapt the way I teach and explain concepts and ideas to fit the needs of each individual student. For example, in tutoring a 7th grade student in pre-algebra last spring, I used colorful, visual representations to depict equations and terminology. I then had the student suggest imagery that would help them to remember concepts and draw their own images on flash cards.

I've tutored several children over the past few years (ranging from 6-15) in Pre-algebra, Algebra 1, English, Literature, and basic spelling and reading comprehension. With each individual, I was able to get a sense of the relationship each child had with the subject at hand, and approach each tutoring session in a way that made that child as comfortable as possible based on their individual needs. As well, I enjoy taking a creative approach to teaching and often find abstract and fun methods to teaching a subject (drawing, crafts, etc.). When I tutored a 9th grade student in English and a 10th grade student in ACT English, I assessed the students' weak spots in grammar, rhetoric, or literary devices (punctuation, run-ons, transitional sentences, style, tone, etc.) and then created a short script that we could act out that would help them apply these concepts to a verbal conversation. As well, I love movies and books and often recommend great films and literature to the students that I tutor.

Elementary Math

Since elementary school, I've always enjoyed solving math problems and equations. Math was always a subject that came quite easy to me and led to me scoring high on the math portion of my SAT exam. As I began studying architecture as an undergraduate, I began to appreciate mathematics and calculations once again and saw their real world value in relation to the built environment. Over the past year, I've helped my 10-year-old neighbor with his 4th/5th grade level math homework and have helped him to drastically improve his test scores. I find that I've been able to cultivate an enjoyable and communicative learning environment through my creative approach which has allowed the student to take an actual interest in the subject.

Growing up with a father who is a writer, there has always been an emphasis placed on reading, writing, and literature in my upbringing. I've always been an avid reader - a passion that will persist for the rest of my life. Throughout high school, I always excelled the most in English and Literature classes and attained an almost-perfect score on the writing section of my SAT (11/12). In college, I took several literature classes (Ancient Greek Literature, Jewish Literature, and Postmodern Literature) and continued to fall in love with analyzing texts. I believe that my background and continued interest in literature and writing will allow me to make learning these subjects into an invaluable experience for each individual student.
