Bio

I've been tutoring and teaching students of all ages and abilities, nationally and internationally, for over nine years. I hold degrees from the University of Notre Dame and the Iowa Writers' Workshop, one of the top graduate programs for creative writing in the world, and spent a year at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland studying Literature, Medieval History, and Theater and volunteering with the creative-writing non-profit Fighting Words. During my MFA, I volunteered at the Iowa Youth Writing Project and designed and taught two freestanding poetry/workshop classes at the University of Iowa. This included working one-on-one with those of my students who sought further academic support in weekly office hours. For three years I was a creative writing teacher and academic mentor at Prep School Consulting in Pasadena, CA, teaching personal and group classes in English and Creative Writing, and helping edit and guide students on their essays, I've helped students get into elite institutions such as USC, Cornell, and Johns Hopkins. I've written digital narrative content for Cut Media in Seattle ("How-to Human," Comcast Watchable), served as an editorial assistant in non-fiction for The Iowa Review, and have written scripted narrative audio for podcasts.

I specialize in all sorts of writing—academic essays in all subjects, applications, manuscripts, poems, short stories, screenplays—and believe in a flexible, mentorship-focused approach to teaching all subjects. Any student who "doesn't get it” often hasn't been communicated to in the right ways. Everyone can learn. As both writer and editor, I combine the flexibility of creation with the precision of revision to tailor how I teach each student, imparting my accrued knowledge so that they can learn in the way most natural and effective for them while gaining skills that they can take with them beyond the assignment, strengthening their overall academic and executive functioning skills, building the bridge from understanding to mastery. I'd love to hear from you.

Fiction Tutoring

Emily brought with her a tenured and compassionate voice to the sophisticated and daunting topic of fiction writing during our lesson. Her impressive experience within the realm of the humanities can bring with it a guiding hand to anyone who is looking to hone there voice and reach its untapped potential. The extensive notes she also provides will also help you break out of bad patterns. Having already planned our next lesson, I know for a fact I will become a stronger writer and communicator having worked with Emily.
