About Charles

Bio

(Note: I live in Los Angeles but welcome all online students as well!) I graduated from Harvard-Westlake School, Vassar College and UCLA School of Law. After college, I taught for two years, including one year as a middle-school English teacher. Upon passing the bar exam, I spent 8+ years as a trial lawyer before switching to legal education. I have taught Trial Advocacy at UCLA Law since the 2016-2017 academic year, and began tutoring on Wyzant in January 2018.

A student coming to me for help will receive friendly, professional, and highly-personalized tutoring. Everyone has a different background, skill-set and academic goal, and I employ lessons and teaching methods tailored to each student's unique situation. As we live in a busy world, I also focus intently on delivering assistance in the most efficient, time-sensitive manner possible.

Helping my students learn something new is the most satisfying part of my job. Whether working with a law student, a 12th grader or an adult returning to school, my goal remains the same: building the writing and thinking skills needed in our fast-paced professional world. I am ready to assist you!

(Note: I live in Los Angeles, but welcome all online students as well!) The first year of law school can be a bewildering and frustrating experience. The reading assignments are lengthy and challenging, professors often seem to be speaking their own private language, and classes can move at light speed. As an experienced legal tutor and UCLA Law lecturer, I can help! I graduated Order of the Coif (top 10% of my class) from UCLA Law in 2007, winning the 2005 Burton Marks prize for the highest grade in a Criminal Procedure class. I spent 8+ years in practice as a trial attorney with the Los Angeles County Public Defender, winning dozens of jury trials, and have taught Trial Advocacy at UCLA Law since Fall 2016. As a veteran tutor on Wyzant, I encourage everyone to review the student feedback on my profile page, which shows the patience, dedication and skill I bring to my teaching. I offer comprehensive tutoring in all 1L subjects, including Contracts, Torts, Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Property, Criminal Law, Constitutional Criminal Procedure, Statutory Interpretation, Legal Writing and Evidence. If you need help understanding the material, learning to case brief, mastering IRAC, studying for exams, writing a memo, or any other component of the 1L curriculum, I am ready to assist. I also encourage upper-year students needing a refresher course or wishing to improve their performance to reach out as well. Bottom line: I want all my students to succeed, and offer my 100% commitment to making that happen!

Thorough and prepared

Charles is always very prepared to comprehensively answer any questions I have about Constitutional Law, whether through cases I have been assigned in class or contemporary issues.

Patient Tutor. Sincere About Wanting to Help Students Learn.

Charles is passionate about teaching students and doesn't give up on you or get frustrated if you're a little slow to catch on to a concept. Does his best to always make time for his students. I highly recommend.

Knowledgeable, Clear, and Helpful

Charles is a fantastic resource! He's fluent in the 1L curriculum, and he can teach complicated, doctrinal material in a palatable way! I entered our session super confused about negligence and left with a solid knowledge base. Throughout our session, he was encouraging, and it's clear he's ready to meet students wherever they are in their learning process.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor.

We went over a crim law "midterm" and he helped me devise a strategy for tackling the exam, focusing on my understanding of the elements of the charges and how to use the facts to best prove or disprove those elements.

A true scholar and exceptional tutor of law.

Charles is a human encyclopedia capable of turning complex issues into simple components. I would recommend him to anyone hoping to get an edge up on their studies. I feel really fortunate to have found him. The fact that I'm even writing this is testament to that, as I don't normally bother with reviews. Although figuring someone reading this receives the same insight as I did from this tutor is what motivated me to do it in the first place.

Great Criminal Law 1L tutor

Went over concepts in criminal law as well as a past exam for my final. He really helped me understand how to think and answer the question as well as helped me understand the call of the questions. I highly recommend working with him!

Patient and kind tutor

He was just suitable for my lacking English ability that every mistake in grammar and wording that I made was kindly corrected by him and that became such a good feedback to me. I'm looking forward for the second lesson soon. :)
