About Ben

Bio

I started climbing 22 years ago on an Outward Bound course in the mountains of my home state of Maine. I was hooked instantly. I dove into trad climbing the next year, at 15, at the great Maine boy's camp, Camp Winona, who's outdoor climbing program is unmatched in New England summer camping. Within two years, I was running the program, leading 4 technical climbing trips/week in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and the coastal cliffs of Acadia.

Within two years, I was running the program, leading 4 technical climbing trips/week in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and the coastal cliffs of Acadia.

I have been teaching climbing and routesetting in climbing gyms and guiding outdoors consistently ever since. I was the Founding Head of Routesetting at Brooklyn Boulders in New York City and Head Routesetter at Rockreation in LA, where I now coach privately.

I coach high level climbing technique, strength training and fitness, sport and trad lead climbing and guide clients privately in the Santa Monica Mountains and Joshua Tree National Monument. I coach clients of all ages and experience levels for both recreation and competition.

And I ain't cheap. But I'm worth it. =) We 21st century humans are just monkeys who spend all our time on the ground. Deep in there is the biological hardwiring for climbing prowess. It's my job to help remind you how to excel at the action for which you were originally designed.

Well Worth The Money

Ben is an extraordinary rock climbing instructor. Aside from showing mastery of the art, he has a nice blend of analytical and creative abilities. Prior to instructing, Ben did a thorough diagnosis to see what my skill level and weaknesses were. I find his lesson challenging both physically and mentally. With his teaching, I have not only deepened my understanding of body biomechanics but also started to develop the mental toughness that is required to deal with gravity, make bold moves and recover from errors. While Ben's teaching style is aggressive, he has a sense of humor that makes his tough lesson quite enjoyable. I would frankly never have attempted a hard climb without his insistence. When it is all said and done, the lesson gave me an amazing feeling and I found myself saying, "Oh wow, I didn't know I could do that!"
