My name is Manuel (or Mano) and I am a drummer, percussionist and drum instructor from Lima, Peru. I graduated with magna cum laude honors from the prestigious Berklee College of Music (Boston, MA), earning my Bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy with a minor in Psychology.

Since my early beginnings learning drum set at age 10, I always valued having great teachers and mentors that fueled my learning and creativity. These teachers have not only been fundamental in my development as a drummer and musician, but have also been role models, constantly motivating me in my musical journey. This is something I want to pass along to my students.

I started teaching drums in my senior year of high school, providing individual lessons for students aged 6 to 27 years old. As I developed my career in music at an early age, already touring extensively with my Rock band both in Lima and in Mexico at this time, I also found myself really enjoying sharing my knowledge of my instrument and watching my students enjoy that feeling of learning something new. Teaching was something I connected with and slowly started to discover my own style and voice as a teacher and communicator of ideas.

In 2012 I was accepted at the prestigious Berklee College of Music (institution where I received a scholarship.) Here, surrounded by amazing talent from around the globe, I studied drums with teachers such as Bertram Lehmann, Robert Kaufmann and was part of Jazz, Afro Cuban, Afro Pop ensembles, expanding my interest and experience in different styles, just as I had done in Peru with distinguished teachers such as Laureano Rigol and Hugo Alcazar.

While still at Berklee, in 2014, I joined the pop artist Amy Allen’s band (formerly called "Amy and the Engine"), with whom I went back to performing actively, which was something I missed dearly. With the band we played in renowned venues and festivals throughout Boston, New York City, New Hampshire, Maine, Chicago, Nashville, Washington D.C, Vermont, St. Louis, including; Gillette Stadium, CMJ Music Festival, Brighton Music Hall, The Sinclair, Berklee Performance Center, The Red Room, The Middle East, Pianos, Rockwood Music Hall, Bowery Electric, Calvin Theater, Old Port Festival, National Cherry Blossom Festival, New England Music Awards and internationally at Canadian Music Week. We supported famous international acts such as Rachel Platten, Vance Joy, The Veronicas, Kaleo, Kacey Musgraves, Guster, Cody Simpson, The Blue Man Group and Keith Lockhart.

In Boston I was also a session and live musician for other artists and musical projects and had the opportunity and honor to perform as a Cajon player with two-time Latin Grammy Award winner Susana Baca at a sold out concert at the BPC Theatre in Boston. Also part of the band, was four-time Latin Grammy Award winning bassist Oscar Stagnaro.

At this same time I also discovered a completely new way of using and connecting with music when I decided to study Music Therapy as a major. This opened a whole new world of possibilities and learning, and I was able to connect with my empathic side when creating music with other people. I was fortunate to work in facilities and organizations such as Boston Children's Hospital, Northshore Consortium, Care Dimensions, Goddard House, Kennedy Longfellow School, amongst others.

Upon graduating from Berklee, after having performed extensively with Amy Allen and other bands/artists, I relocated to New York City. Here I received my certification as a board-certified music therapist (MT-BC) and continued an active performing career alongside dinstinguished bands/artists such as Riz La Vie, Nella Rojas, Alea, Laura Rizzotto, Eleni Arapolgou and several others. At this time I also taught music lessons at two institutions; Multi Arts Academy (Newark, NJ) and Hand In Hand Family Services (Brooklyn, NY).

My style of teaching not only focuses on building technique and gaining specific skills such as rhythmic notation (reading music), but also involves being able to play in a musical context early on (either accompanied by an album recording and or accompanying students with other instruments). Not only do I set short term and long term goals for students but also value the actual process of learning, always acknowledging their own learning pace and maintaining classes creative and fun!

Please feel free to contact me for private lessons for Drum Set, Cajon (Peruvian and Spanish) or Electric/Acoustic Guitar. My professional resume is available upon request.

Thank your consideration.

Sincerely,

Manuel.

I have been a private drum instructor for over 10 years, having given lessons to individual students, groups/ensembles and in music academies. Age groups I've taught have ranged from 6 to 27 years old and have been provided for beginner to intermediate leveled students. I have used my extensive performance career with distinguished artists in New York and Boston to fuel off my teaching, always emphasizing the importance of practicing within an actual musical context (either with other people and/or following an actual recording, in order to apply what is learned. My experience as a board-certified music therapist also allows me to be both goal and process oriented when teaching a musical instrument.
