About Skylar

Hello!

I've been teaching in one form or another for my whole life. It started as a young teenager when I began teaching Taekwondo to kids of all ages. My students were always very successful on the tests, a result that I cultivated by keeping the class structure new and creative, while providing highly personalized tips for each kid's needs.

In high school I added academic tutoring to my repertoire. Because I was always valedictorian of my class, my peers of the same age or younger frequently asked for my help formally or informally in subjects from mathematics to chemistry. Five of my official, paid tutoring students worked with me consistently and always drove their grades up to A's and B's.

On standardized tests, I always received either a perfect score or one point below perfect on every Math and Science section, from the SAT and SAT Subject Tests, to the ACT, AP tests, and later on the graduate GRE and GRE Physics.

I graduated with a dual major in Physics and Astrophysics from UC Berkeley, and was asked to give the commencement speech due to my 4.00 GPA in major-related classes for the first 7 semesters, and because of the 3 research projects I did in Astrophysics, Analytical Chemistry, and Quantum Field Theory. The group homework sessions often involved me explaining the physics problems to the rest of my peers -- the solutions were generally very out-of-left-field, and so it took creativity to help each unique student understand.

As I reached my 20's, I gave many more official academic presentations. I've presented posters at conferences including Quantum Field Theory and Biomedical Informatics, given several talks in my Berkeley classes, and finally taught a semester-long section of Psychology Statistics in my Cognitive Science graduate program at UC San Diego. It was also my responsibility to grade papers and provide office hours for both that statistics class and an intermediate Probability/ Intro to Artifical Intelligence class at UCSD.

I have since worked in Machine Learning and Data Science at a growing software company, started my own e-commerce company, and negotiated private equity funding for small businesses.

Most recently, however, I was the Center Director at Mathnasium of Manhattan Beach, where I taught students mathematics at the K-12 levels. Mathnasium has great methodologies for teaching, that I am proud to be able to incorporate into my tutoring service today. I am in the process of opening my own Mathnasium centers in the Long Beach area, and I will always be private tutoring as well. Math and Physics are always at the front of my mind, and I am excited to help as many students as possible!

I look forward to helping you or your student become confident in school! Contact me!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I was previously the Center Director at Mathnasium of Manhattan Beach, where I taught hundreds of different students (and instructors) mathematics at the K-12 levels, with a focus on topics prerequisite to Algebra, including addition techniques, multiplication techniques, as well as understanding fractions and proportions. Mathnasium has taught math for 15 years with a methodology that is highly similar to the common core. I have become a great common core instructor via my experience with teaching students the Mathnasium Method as well as frequently assisting Mathnasium students with their common core homework from school.

Linear Algebra

I earned a Master's degree from UC San Diego in Applied Mathematics, for which my coursework and research in Optimization, Machine Learning, and other advanced math was all heavily founded upon Linear Algebra. The concepts are very deep and are best explained by an instructor who has significant experience utilizing them.

Great Tutor!

Skylar did a great job going through difficult AP physics concepts with my son giving him confidence in what he was learning. He spent a lot of time with him carefully going through the concepts in a language that he could understand.
