Bio

A lifelong learner, I enjoy sharing my love of learning with others. A cum laude graduate of Harvard and an MFA graduate of Carnegie Mellon, I know from personal experience how hard work produces great results. An avid reader and lover of language, I also know how powerful it is to learn and master communication skills. With a strong eye for detail, I love helping students find stronger and clearer ways of expressing themselves verbally.

I began tutoring younger students in essay writing while still in high school as part of the Writing Lab. At Carnegie Mellon University, I taught three semesters of Intro to Theater, where I guided students new to the form in both written and in-class presentation skills, based on both general analysis and close reading. As a private tutor, I have worked with students from elementary to graduate school on both academic and creative writing, helping them master the tools of grammar and style, and find their voice. My greatest satisfaction comes from seeing the confidence writing skills bring to a student; the improved grades are a bonus. I tailor my lesson plans to the needs of the student and the situation, assigning homework when appropriate, and/or working with them to prepare for an upcoming paper or presentation.

I specialize in reading and writing skills. As a history and literature major, I have spent a great deal of time honing expository writing skills, as well as basic reading comprehension, proofreading, literary analysis, close reading, and creative writing.

I am generally available 9am-8pm M-F and by arrangement on weekends. I can travel or meet online. Please contact me to set up a session or consultation.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you succeed!

Excellent tutor

We had two meetings with Max. Trying to get APUSH knowledge up before the tests. I must say that Max is a gem. Smart, funny, practical and relatable for my teenage son and is quite motivating (which is not easy to find for my son). Definitely the best tutor we had in a long time.

Great writing tutor!

Max did a great job editing my essay. He fixed a lot of punctuation mistakes and grammatical errors and he also had a lot of insights into my writing that were really helpful. Thanks Max!

Thanks, Melissa, I really enjoyed working with you too!

Extremely knowledgeable, patient and kind

We hired Max to help our son with AP US History and had our first session last night. Have already booked the second session. He was "super smart" (according to our son) and very patient and kind. It was our first time using the app and it has worked out very well so far!

He is the best !

He is one of the most caring tutors that I have ever had. He helped me to understand the hard text, develop my critical thinking skills. He also guides me to organize my thought and find my voice when it comes to writing essays. On top of that, he is very encouraging and enthusiastic tutor. I have met amount of tutors in my whole life; some of them are more like a machine than a human being, and Max is definitely a genuine person. Just want to say "thank you, Max !"

Knowledgeable and patient

The first time Max and I met was helpful for him to find out the areas in which we should focus the most so that I could have a better success in our sessions. Very helpful, patient and knowledgeable.
