I am an experienced Elementary Teacher from Sydney, Australia and have recently moved to Los Angeles. I have 4+ years of experience working with underprivileged students who need extra attention and consideration towards their individual learning needs.
Throughout my teaching career I have worked with a variety of high needs students, including those who suffer from developmental learning delays, ADHD, refugees, students with high functioning Autism, behavioral issues, metal disturbances, English as a Second or Additional Language, gifted and talented students. Having worked with such a variety of students, I have developed the skills to individualize lessons catered to the student to create the safest possible learning environment.
I will always focus on the students strengths and provide opportunities for the learner to first succeed. Then take on more challenging tasks which may be confronting or uncomfortable for students that experience difficulty with certain subjects.
I have studied and taught successful Early Numeracy Strategies to students of all skill levels to strengthen and solidify their working mathematically strategies. Ensuring learners fully understand the basics will only allow for the advancement and proficiency of advanced Mathematics.
I specialize in Phonic and Phonemic awareness (letter and sound recognition, and sounds and speech relationship) to build a strong foundation for beginning readers. I move on to reading comprehension strategies as the student develops fluency in their reading. Students will learn to dissect and comprehend what they are reading, develop informed opinions and how to concisely summarize new information.
First you learn to read, then you read to learn.
I am more than willing to focus on a particular subject, multiple subjects or assistance with homework.
I am happy to travel and meet in a public place (e.g. a Library where students will have access to a variety of books) and I will bring personalized teaching materials including math manipulatives (Dice, Dominoes, counters, ten frames etc) to enhance a learners cognitive retention.
I encourage an open dialogue relationship where the parent and tutor work together to discuss the learning needs and goals of their child.
I am available everyday from 9am to 6pm. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have and I will respond as soon as possible. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
