About Kelsey

I am an energetic tutor who is passionate about teaching and instilling a love of learning in my students. I currently work in education outside the classroom, and am excited to connect with new students to help them thrive.

My career in education started five years ago, working as a Biochemistry Teaching Assistant at the University of Minnesota. Throughout my three semesters as a TA, I helped hundreds of students master complex concepts and provided individualized one-on-one tutoring through office hours, phone calls and exam study sessions. After college, I relocated to San Antonio, Texas with Teach for America, where I worked briefly as a 7th and 8th grade science teacher. I earned my provisional teaching certificate from the State of Texas, specializing in Science 7-12.

After my time in the classroom, I joined the Hill Country Science Mill, a new science museum outside San Antonio, where I served as the Manager of STEM Education. In this role, I oversaw our instructional team and designed hands-on, engaging K-12 STEM labs and summer camp curriculum. I have a passion for making learning engaging and relevant for my students, and ensuring they feel successful through every lab and activity.

I am excited to begin tutoring students in Los Angeles and bring my multitude of teaching experiences together to provide individualized instruction for my students. I fully believe in providing excellent customer service, and offer free phone consultations between tutoring sessions in order to continue promoting the success of my students. In addition to in-person tutoring, I offer phone sessions, homework checks, and FaceTime example problems with any client who requests it. Beyond teaching academic content, I strive to promote academic excellence through teaching study skills, organization and time management.

I am excited to meet new scholars and work together to enhance their academic success, personal confidence, and life-long love of learning. I build relationships with my students quickly by investing in their holistic well-being and success, and look forward to sharing my passion, enthusiasm and well-planned lessons with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anatomy

I have a degree in Generics and Cell Biology (GPA: 3.9) from the University of Minnesota. Coursework for my degree included many advanced medical sciences courses, including Anatomy and Physiology (which I earned an A in). And I took a one semester human cadaver anatomy lab, so I have direct hands-on experience learning and memorizing parts of the body.

I also have experience successfully teaching college level course material as a biochemistry teaching assistant for two years. Plus, I am skilled at explaining science concepts and making them fun, as both a high school biology and middle school science teacher.

Biology

I have earned a B.S. in Genetics, Cell Biology & Development from the University of Minnesota (GPA: 3.9). And I have extensive science teaching experience - courses taught include college-level biochemistry, high school biology and middle school science.

Chemistry

I have a B.S. in Genetics, Cell Biology & Development from the University of Minnesota (GPA: 3.9). Plus, I have extensive science teaching experience -- courses taught include college-level biochemistry, high school biology and middle school science. I also have mastery of chemistry concepts - courses taken include Intro. Chem 1 & 2, Organic Chemistry 1 & 2 and Organic Chemistry Lab.

Genetics

I am highly qualified to teach Genetics, as I have a Bachelor of Science from the University of Minnesota in Genetics, Cell Biology and Development. Throughout college, I worked in a cancer research lab, where I studied driver mutations and their effects in causing colorectal cancer. Additionally, I have taught basic genetics as both a middle school science teacher and a high school biology teacher.

Helpful Tutor — Kelsey was able to break down the information that I was not clear about. After tutoring, I have a better solid understanding on the concept. Matter of fact because Kelsey was able to break down the information, I receive an "A" on my quiz. ...
