About Salvador

Hi! My name is Sal and I am passionate about mentoring others and helping them achieve their goals (learn a new language, play a song on the guitar, understand a topic, finish a homework assignment, ace an exam, get a good grade in class, win a scholarship, attend college, etc). Whatever it may be, I am here to help. I am working on my PhD in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at UCLA. I concurrently work on a project at Edwards Air Force Research Laboratory. I have a strong background in Math and Physics, and I am fluent in English and Spanish. I have also been fortunate enough to receive many scholarships/graduate fellowships and internship offers (Chrysler, Cummins) over the past years. In addition, I have done research projects at several prestigious universities/institutions (Caltech, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Irvine, Edwards AFRL, Sandia National Labs-CRF). Lastly, I know how to play the acoustic guitar (I learned when I was 14 years old and played in my church band and weddings for several years).

I have extensive tutoring experience (5+ years). As an undergraduate, I tutored other minority students in engineering, math, and physics courses. While in high school, I tutored other high school students in English, Math, and Science. I even remember tutoring younger kids when I was in elementary school! I am a first-generation college student and I have two younger brothers, one who has a learning disability. Teaching and mentoring them has helped me become a patient person. Thus, it is in my nature to mentor and tutor others, and I have spent most of my life doing it.

As a tutor, I am very patient, attentive, encouraging, warm, and welcoming. Also, I am flexible to teaching subject matter in different styles (rephrasing, repeating, giving examples, giving hints/tips) in order to accommodate the student. I like having the student feel a sense of accomplishment, regardless of the task. This requires the student to do most of their own work, with my guidance of course. In this way, the student will continue to be motivated and will learn valuable skills.

Go ahead and schedule your tutoring session with me; you will not regret it! Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions and/or concerns. I would prefer to meet on the UCLA campus (library or near engineering) or at a local coffee shop in Westwood. I can also drive to your house in the Beverly Hills, Westwood, and Santa Monica areas. Before meeting up, I would appreciate it if you could message me what specific area of math/physics you need help with. This would allow me to be better prepared and make the most out of our time together. See you soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I grew up going to church since I was very young and I was extrememely involved/active in church when I was in high school. I constanly gave Bible studies and sermons to both teens and adults, and I study the Bible often. The pastor at my church can verify all this.

Career Development

I have mentored many students and given them advice on their career. Also, I have gone through the undergraduate college experience and now I am going through the graduate college experience, so I can help then navigate through any of those avenues. Lastly, I have interned at several places, which means I have built a network of professionals that I can use to help other students.

College Counseling

Since I was in middle school, I have worked with and gotten to know many counselors. Also, as a first-generation, minority engineering student, I am suitable to give younger students advice about how to navigate getting into college, doing well as an undergraduate, and the options that are available to them once they graduate. Lastly, I have visited many different colleges, so I can give them a perspective about their differences.

Guitar

I learned to play guitar ten years ago and have been playing since then. I used to play on a weekly basis at my church and played at special events, such as weddings. I used to give lessons to others a few years ago.

Handwriting

When I was young, I won an award for having good handwriting. After many years of school, I have mastered neat and fast handwriting. I helped my youngest brother with this skill.

Linear Algebra

I took a Linear Algebra course as an undergraduate and did well. Now I am taking an Advanced Numerical Linear Algebra graduate course, where I am implementing the linear algebra I learned several years ago. I constantly use linear algebra in other courses, my research, and when I code.

Linux

I learned Linux several years ago for a research project I had at UC Berkeley. Since then, I have used Linux for other research projects, such as in Caltech and now the Air Force Base. I have helped other students become more familiar with Linux.

MATLAB

I took a course in Matlab as an undergraduate and I did well. In addition, I constantly use Matlab for my course projects and for my research. I have taught other students how to code using Matlab before.

Mechanical Engineering

I received my Bachelors in Science in both Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from UC Irvine. Now I am about to receive my Masters in Aerospace Engineering, which is a specialty within Mechanical Engineering. I have tutored on many of the upper division engineering courses in my field.

Public Speaking

While in high school, I constantly gave sermons at my church, which required me to prepare a presentation and speak in front of 100 people. In addition, I have given many research presentations at national and international conferences over the years. As a graduate student, I present my project results on a weekly basis to my advisor and lab group.

Python

I learned Python on my own several years ago, after my freshman year. In addition, I took a course involving Python. I have used Python for several projects. I have taught other students how to use code using Python before.

Solidworks

As an undergraduate, I took a Solidworks course and received an A. Also, I have often used Solidworks for some courses, my research, and other projects. I have also taught students how to use this software before.

Study Skills

As an engineering student for several years, I have learned how to manage my time wisely in order to complete my tasks on time and enjoy my personal hobbies. I worked for several years as a mentor at UC Irvine, where I constantly gave students advice to better improve their studying. Lastly, to this day, I implement the same studying strategies.
