About Cesar

I'm eager to help you read effectively and write clear academic or professional essays in the Humanities, Social and Health Sciences, or grant applications. My approach focuses on analyzing texts and asking critical questions that allow you to brainstorm, develop concepts, and refine your ideas. In reading, we go over methods for engaging with the material quickly and efficiently. When writing, I can help you develop a script, I can help edit your work, and/or give you feedback that will anticipate and improve how readers respond to you writing. I have been described by some as a reading and writing coach, because of my positive attitude and ability to help students get through challenging assignments calmly and positively. I have a PhD in music history, but am an expert in developing reading and writing skills in most subjects outside of the hard sciences. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Music History

I have a BA, MA, and PhD in music history. I love playing music, but when I would do research on the lives of composers whose music I loved, the music became all the more meaningful. Writing about music is very hard, but it starts with building on material anchors, such as a musical example, a primary source, or simply brain storming about why you like how something sounds.

Public Speaking

I enjoy public speaking, because I am a people person and love conversing with people and feel comfortable sharing my ideas with them. My public speaking abilities allowed me to earn the presidency of my college fraternity and of the Graduate Music Society in graduate school, because I was required to provide a clear vision of my leadership potential in public debates with my opponents. I further refined my public speaking abilities by presenting my graduate research in professional conference settings, invited campus talks, and public lectures (some 15 total in the last five years). I received the Graduate Student Prize from the Society for Christian Scholarship in Music for having delivered the best presentation in 2014. Lastly, I have honed my public speaking skills in traditional classroom settings, while having taught four college courses--both lecture style and discussion based--in graduate school.

Religion

My doctoral dissertation focused on the music of nuns in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century New Spain. The music was integral to the liturgies and rituals of the convents, particularly with respect to adhering to Tridentine Reforms. My research has contributed to the discourse of Christian mysticism, as I have shown that music enhanced the ecstatic state of mystic nuns by reading through devotional literature and nuns' biographies.

Great tutor. Very helpful with constructing theses

I received a 97 on a paper Cesar helped me with. Not only did he assist me with my grammar and prose, but also in the construction of my papers argument. He asked leading questions which helped me greatly. I highly recommend him for any sort of writing, especially anything analytical.
