Cal State L.A. (Master's)
I am recently retired after 34 years in education. I have taught special needs students from pre school to adult age but the majority of my experience is in elementary education. That is also my favorite age level. I have both general education and special education credentials. I have a masters degree in special education and I am national board certified in exceptional needs, mild moderate disabilities. I have been seeing private tutoring clients for the past two years. I also taught many after school intervention sessions at my school.
I have recently tutored 4th and 5th grade students in math and language arts. I include games to make memorization tasks fun and I search for motivating reading passages. I take advantage of many game and math practice apps to make learning fun.
I understand the necessity of students mastering prerequisite skills in math before moving up to the next skill. At the same time I understand that students who need extra practice can find skill practice tedious so I try to use games and other motivating activities.
I have extensive experience in teaching phonics, syllabication and reading comprehension. I use leveled reading materials for students to progress in reading. I use e-books and reading passages from the Read Naturally program. I use structured and sequential lessons in reading, writing and grammar.
I have extensive experience in teaching basic reading skills to struggling students. I use sequenced instruction that includes learning the sounds, phonemic awareness and phonics. I have experience in assessment to pinpoint a student's areas of need.
I look forward to working with new students. I will structure the time and lessons to make your tutoring experience fun and worthwhile. I am recently retired after 34 years in education. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
