About Sandra

I am recently retired after 34 years in education. I have taught special needs students from pre school to adult age but the majority of my experience is in elementary education. That is also my favorite age level. I have both general education and special education credentials. I have a masters degree in special education and I am national board certified in exceptional needs, mild moderate disabilities. I have been seeing private tutoring clients for the past two years. I also taught many after school intervention sessions at my school.

I am currently tutoring a 4th grade student in math and language arts three days a week. We have been working together for 2 years. I love seeing her academic progress and watching her confidence grow. I try to include games to make memorization tasks fun and I search for motivating reading passages for her. I take advantage of many game and math practice apps to make learning fun.

I understand the necessity of students mastering prerequisite skills before moving up to the next skill. At the same time I understand that students who need extra practice can find skill practice tedious so I try to use games and other motivating activities.

I have extensive experience in teaching phonics, syllabication and reading comprehension. I understand that I must use leveled reading materials for students to progress in reading. I use e-books and reading passages from the Read Naturally program. I use structured and sequential lessons in reading, writing and grammar.

I have extensive experience in teaching basic reading skills to struggling students. I use sequenced instruction that includes learning the sounds , phonemic awareness and phonics.. I have experience in assessment to pinpoint a student's areas of need.

I look forward to working with new students. I will structure the time and lessons to make your tutoring experience fun and worthwhile.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary Math

I am national board certified in teaching students with exceptional needs. I have life credentials in general elementary and special education. I recently retired from LAUSD as a resource specialist teacher where I worked with students in grades K-5 in whole group, small group, and individual math instruction and math intervention.

Reading

I am a retired teacher with credentials in both general and special education. I currently tutor two fourth grade students in both reading and math. I have worked with whole class, small groups and individual groupings to help children master basic skills and gain confidence. I was a national board certified teacher. My first session will include assessment and I provide an assessment report and periodic written updates to the parents.
