I taught English in central London schools for eighteen years and was Head of Department for half of that time. Part of my work as a teacher has been to tutor 1:1 and small groups of students after class whether this be students who are learning English as another language, coaching students to pass national exams, or helping students to develop levels of insight, analysis and understanding of literature and language required to pass examinations and interviews for entrance into highly respected universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh and Saint Andrews.
As an experienced teacher, I can quickly identify gaps in my students’ knowledge, skills and understanding and find ways to fill these gaps that are stimulating and fun. As a life-long learner myself, I know how important it is to be encouraged and to experience success along the way. I have an impressive track record of equipping my students with the skills and knowledge needed to achieve the best grades they can. From my knowledge and experience, I believe I would be able to tutor students in English literature and language from age 11 to undergraduate level. I would also be able to teach English to students who wish to improve their proficiency and or mastery of the language.
I have a thorough knowledge of the English Canon having studied and taught Chaucer, Shakespeare, Donne, Blake, Austen, Dickens et al multiple times to students aged 11 – 19. Clearly this wide age range requires a sophisticated level of successful differentiation to make such authors accessible.
In terms of American and Canadian literature I am mostly familiar with Fitzgerald, Williams, Plath, Dickenson, Steinbeck and Atwood. Naturally, as an honors graduate of English, I would be able to teach any literary text with just a few days’ notice to read and prepare.
I am well versed in literary theory and literary genres and have many years of experience of teaching senior students (17-19 year olds) to apply theory and analysis to literary texts taking into account the views of established theorists and critics. Particular specialisms would be dystopian literature, 18th Century Literature, Marxist, Feminist, and Psychoanalytical theories.
I am also able to tutor students on all forms of writing: transactional, functional, critical, and creative. Writing forms constitutes 50% of high-stakes national examinations in England so I have a wealth of experience of making writing interesting, relevant and exciting to young people.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
