Michigan State University (Telecommunications)
I have a bachelor's degree in Telecommunication/Journalism from Michigan State University. Immediately after graduation I worked in TV and news radio, but soon after moving to L.A. I switched over from news writing to entertainment writing, and worked on sitcoms like "The Parkers" and "That's So Raven." However, the years I did not work on a show, I always relied on my teaching experience, specializing in English. I began working for LAUSD as a substitute teacher, using my emergency credentials, then later became an independent contract sub at several charter schools. I'm also a screenwriter instructor for a non-profit organization called Kids In The Spotlight.
I started 1 on 1 tutoring 10 years ago for ABC Learn, then later several other tutoring companies. I worked with students from 1st grade through 8th teaching math and English. I helped a 2nd grader having trouble reading and identifying letters, begin reading at the top of her class. I helped a 5th grader struggling in math with a 1.5 g.p.a. to end up with a 3.0 g.p.a., and I also helped a gifted 1st grader go from doing 1st grade math to 3rd-grade math. Through patience and dedication, there is no child I can't help. I provide assessment tests to find out where a student currently stands in a subject, and progress reports with weekly homework assignments. Although I normally work with students 1 on 1, I've also tutored students 3 to 1.
I enjoy tutoring math for grades 1st through 8th grade. I use manipulatives, like flash cards, white boards, computer games and worksheets to teach numbers, counting, addition, subtracting, multiplication, division, fractions, and pre-algebra.
I enjoy tutoring English for grades 1st through 8th. I use worksheets, computer lessons, books, and white boards to teaching grammar, literature, reading comprehension, and essay writing.
So if your child is in grades 1st - 8th and has problems in Math or English or just wants to get ahead, please contact me. I am willing to work with your schedule. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Before teaching I began my career in journalism, writing new stories so I know the importance of grammar. When teaching grammar I first teach a new lesson, review it, then use worksheets and a whiteboard to see how much the student comprehends. I also try to use manipulatives so keep the student engaged.
