About Michael

I am experienced as both a musician and a teacher. I have created music with hip-hop groups, a band fusing bluegrass and klezmer, an orchestra playing traditional Arabic music, gospel choirs, a cumbia and ranchero group, punk rock, folk singer-songwriters, and country bands.

Basically, musically speaking, I don’t believe in boundaries – I don’t think musicians need to be categorized or put into little boxes. I think people should be allowed to explore whatever voices they find something true and beautiful – and feel free to add their own voice. Just as with my own playing, as a teacher I seek to unleash the creativity and freedom and love of music I believe is within everyone, and strive to be flexible and patient, doing whatever it takes to help you empower yourself.

I am trained in the Suzuki Method as a way of introducing the violin, as well as the Music Together method of building basic music competence, and practice these skills alongside building violin repertoire that both speaks to the versatility of the instrument in adding to the diversity of the world's musical expressions, and emphasis your own "heart music" that really connects with you.

I teach in a fun and gentle style that is encouraging and patient, building a solid foundation but trying to have fun in the process.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

General Music

I have played violin for almost 25 years, studying the historical contexts alongside performance practice of a wide variety of historical and cultural styles. I studied music throughout college, and have studying early childhood music education alongside violin pedagogy. I have a master's degree in applied ethnomusicology, looking at the social impact of music making and its power in building communities.

Violin

I took 16 years of private lessons and I have 5 years of teaching experience. I have experienced Teacher Training in Book 1 of the Suzuki Method and also taken Teacher training with Julie Lyon Lieberman.

Patient and prepared

This was my daughter's first lesson with Michael and she was excited and happy at the end of the lesson. She's been practicing every day.
