About Justin

Hey guys, my name's Justin! A little bit about myself in pertinence to what I'd like to teach here at Wyzant.

During my junior year in high school I scored a 770 on my math SATs in my first attempt. I believe I have some shortcuts in thinking that may help you process equations quicker or find alternative means to solving a problem.

After high school I attended and graduated from NYU majoring in nutrition and minoring in creative writing. At the same time I got into powerlifting then eventually just moderate daily fitness routines. Still 4 years after graduating I have maintained a solid fitness and nutrition regimen without going overboard and sacrificing a healthy and enjoyable lifestyle.

In terms of cooking, I am interested in baking and homebrewing (brewing beer). Although I am still relatively a novice in the field of baking, I'd be more than glad to teach others what I do know while supplying a safe environment with new ingredients to test out together. In terms of homebrewing, I am pretty well versed on how to create beer starting from the grain all the way to the keg. In addition to almost starting a career in brewing beer, I have also entered competitions and joined homebrewing clubs. I also constantly try new beers and read books on the subject.

Lastly, a year ago I became TEFL certified and considered teaching English abroad in Korea before deciding to move to Los Angeles instead. I do have some experience working with ESL students in summer programs teaching some English as well.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Cooking

In the subject of homebrewing I've read many of the fundamental texts regarding brewing and its history. In addition to once pursuing a career in a commercial craft brewery, I have also entered and placed highly in homebrewing competitions. Even today I still continue to homebrew creating beers completely from scratch and providing them to local venues for private events.

I also have a fundamental understanding of baking. I usually bake something new everyday and am continually expanding my knowledge on the craft experimenting with a variety of ingredients. If I should teach baking, it would be more of an experimental partnership with my students while supplying ingredients out of my own pocket.

Fitness

Ever since high school I have been going to the gym regularly. Over the years it has varied between powerlifting, basketball, and a simple fitness regimen. I also majored in nutrition at NYU and took various internships related to the field. Still today, I continue to eat healthy and workout regularly while maintaining a balance lifestyle.

Public Speaking

During high school, college, my career as a business consultant, and in various customer service jobs (Foot Locker, Bartending, Farmers Markets), I have always relied on public speaking. My main focus here would be on eye contact, body language, tone, confidence, and other intangibles by primarily engaging in practice speaking sessions.
