In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Studying jazz guitar in high school and college, I became proficient in scales and music theory. My classes and private lessons required that I learn music by listening to recordings. This meant learning to play and transpose recordings into sheet music, including melodies, chord changes , and chord voicings. The majority of my ear training comes from my experience recording and performing my own music, as well as other peoples music. I can deduce the key, chord changes, and melody of a recording , often by relating it to a song I've already learned. This is a good method for teaching a song to a student.
