About Mark Floyd

Hello! I'm a Senior Software Engineer with a passion for tutoring and training. My 18 years of field experience, and several opportunities to help train others over the years have put me in a good place to help empower others to succeed in the field.

I specialize in Python tutoring (I was a Python trainer at Dreamworks Animation for ~5 years) - and can also handle general programming training, and software system engineering and architecture training. I also offer services of performing practice interviews, and resume consulting. As someone who's been part of hiring process for staff ranging from interns up to principal level staff, I'm in a great position to help high school and college students and have their resumes and stand out from the crowd.

I generalize in "Jack of All Trades" sorts of roles. I have a strong background in backend service systems (web services, database/file system backends, full stack roles, etc). My former employers include NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratories, and Dreamworks Animation SKG. I've also spent time working in 3 different startup companies. And I currently serve as Advisory Board Member to my Alma Mater's Computer Science Department.

My base rate is $100/hour for students within my specified mileage range. Students outside of my mileage range will be subject to a higher fee rate.

Look forward to working with you!

"Brilliant and adaptable to my needs!"

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Computer Programming

I have a bachelors in computer science (class of 2003), and have been teaching/tutoring students in various computer science concepts for nearly 10 years. I have personally worked with students completely new to a particular topic, and students who are veterans who just need pointer in right direction.

My tutoring methods focus more on empowering the student to work after class - ensuring they're able to remain productive without me sitting next to them. Things like Global Perspective, Architecture Models, and systems my students are familiar with - I use these to relate materials to their existing expertise domains.

Linux

I've been working in Linux professionally for over 16 years. And have used several different distributions (Redhat, Fedora, SuSE, Debian, Ubuntu). As a side note, I'm also familiar with Sun Solaris.

I'm well versed in writing bash scripts, CSH scripts, and have been teaching debugging courses that exercise many of Linux's utility apps (awk, sed, find, gdb, lsof, cat) for the past 5 years.

Depending on the topic, I am able to provide tutorials on using Linux

Python

I have been coding in Python since 2007. I got my start in Python coding from Ron Garret (Google Employee #108, Creator of Google Adwords, investor and interim CTO of our old startup company Evryx)

I spent the last 5 years teaching python debugging courses at Dreamworks. I also worked in a department whose job relied heavily on explaining coding problems to programmers and management level employees.

That combined with over 7 years of teaching technical courses at Dreamworks makes me well suited to teaching Python

Brilliant and adaptable to my needs! — Mark's the BEST! I told him my learning style and he adapted perfectly in a way that no other tutor has . Mark explains things in a way and process that I understand. He also lets me know of supplementary resources to aid in my learning when I'm not with him. Exactly what I was hoping for! ...
