About Lola

I am a 28 year old French native living in Los Angeles for the past two-and-half years. I have been tutoring for 10 years in France ranging from elementary school to high school. I have been tutoring an elementary student since I've been in LA.

I have a BA equivalent in English Literature.
For the past ten years, I have been working with kids in tutoring programs, after class homework and summer camps. I have worked with underprivileged children in Paris, tutoring them to perform better in school, taking them to Museums and cultural activities.

Ranging from 6 to 14, I helped those students do their homework (French literature, history, geography , math...) and working on grammar, spelling, pronunciation and handwriting.
In France, children can have a lot of homework for the next day in many different subjects. You have to adapt quickly depending on the kids, their teachers, their school. I was working for the schools in the 19th district of Paris, in classroom, helping up to eight children at a time.

I found myself to be rigorous, yet, I know how to adapt to each situation. I like to work step by step giving a chance to talk about difficulties, to make sure that there is no hang ups. I make sure that the student never feels failure. I have a passion for teaching and love to closely monitor progress and achieve goals. Working with inner-city kids taught me that teaching and tutoring has to be in a relax environment with no pressure.

Learning French, like any foreign language, is a process. Even though there is a lot of rules to learn and correct pronunciation, I make sure to adapt to the student needs and level. Learning and teaching a foreign language has to be fun!

As a native French Parisian, I love to talk about my culture and what makes it so special. I’m rewarded when I notice progress. Setting goals is essential, whether someone needs help with homework, learn to speak some french for a business trip or for fun. For someone looking to learn a new language, it's important to keep it organic: the main goal is to be understood and to know the structure of the language.

It is very important to identify needs and capabilities, some like more structured lessons around books and homework, others like to talk and work on their accent. Many tools help reaching those goals like music, movies and reading. And I play accordion!

Learning a new language requires a bit of mind gymnastics but it's about communicating with others in their native tongues, understand the subtleties of a culture through its language and enjoy a new form of expression.

I have a BA in English Literature from the University of Clermont-Ferrand (France). I also graduated from the Drama Conservatoire and from the Florent school of drama in Paris.
I have been playing accordion for 18 years. I love all the Arts: painting, photography, music from all over the world, I have a good knowledge of European theater (my favorite authors being Chekhov, Moliere, Shakespeare, Marivaux). I have performed 2 years in a row at the International Theater Festival of Avignon.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
