About Matt

I got my start in the experimental Minneapolis music scene as an adolescent in the early 2000's, the spirit of which I carried with me to Oberlin, OH. I got my Bachelors of Music from the conservatory there, where I designed my own major in Contemporary Bass Performance. The major allowed me to pursue my interest in Jazz, Classical, Computer Music and composition, extended techniques, and historical performance. In addition to performance and writing classes, I also studied the applicable music history, theory, and ear training.

While my studies gave me a foundation upon which I've built my playing career, I was also given license to take charge of my learning. That spirit followed me first to Chicago, and then to California. It's a privilege to study the music I love, and to try to incorporate what I've learned into my own music. As a teacher, I use my experience to help students take charge of their own learning and forge their own artistic voice.

My work and performances have seen ink in The New York Times, Pulse of the Twin Cities, the Allmusic Guide, Music Defined, and the Oberlin Review. I have worked with Laboratory Dancers (Chicago), Le Tour, Oberlin Dance Company, Fonema Consort, High Concept Laboratories, Death & Pretzels, Rediscover Theatre, and several other groups around the Minneapolis, Oberlin, and Chicago areas. I am also a three-time participant in the Chicago Home Theater Festival.

Please drop me a line through the site - I'd love to hear what you're up to!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

Composition was a major part of my studies at Oberlin Conservatory. The culmination of my major was a 70-minute score for the silent movie "The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari" for string trio, upright and electric bass, percussion, sax, and live and canned electronics. In addition, I have also composed for several plays and performance art pieces in Chicago and Oberlin, and released seven albums of my material.

Ear Training

I took four semesters of ear training at Oberlin Conservatory, in addition to some supplementary classes. I have had the opportunity to put these skills to use in my own performance practice, as well as in the lesson room.

General Music

I have a degree from one of the most prestigious conservatories in the country, and have spent most of my life playing in bands. I also worked as a record buyer at a record store for three years; this trifecta has given me a solid foundation not only of understanding music, but the tools to talk about it to people of varying interests and with varying degrees of knowledge.

Music History

In addition to studying Music History at Oberlin Conservatory, I am a lifelong student of music history. I read a lot about various music eras (with a specific focus on 20th Century music), and play music from across time. I also worked at a record store for three years in Chicago with career DJs and musicians, which provided me a different angle at which to view the history of music. This allows me to have a flexible approach when teaching it, and the foundation to learn about more music history as it interests me.

Sight Singing

Sight singing was a major part of my ear training classes in college, so during the two years I took these classes I learned a few tricks to make sight singing easier and more helpful.

Songwriting

I have written, recorded, produced, and released six albums of my own material, in addition to touring the country twice to support it. I played in bands for six years before my first solo release, some of which I was the primary songwriter. My writing stretches across genres, and my background encourages a flexible approach when teaching the craft of songwriting.
