About Bhavani

I have a strong passion for teaching and sharing the music with others. Currently, I am co-principal oboist in the Young Artists Symphony Orchestra in Los Angeles. Prior performing experience includes Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra, Seattle Festival Orchestra, Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra, and Puget Sound Symphony Orchestra.

I received my Bachelor's Degree in Oboe Performance from the University of Washington, and I am currently a graduate student at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music. From my studies at these institutions, I am well versed in many areas in music, such as music theory, ear training, and music history. In addition, I have studied counterpoint, conducting, composition, piano, and Schenkerian analysis.

My teaching experience includes giving private oboe instruction and tutoring students in music theory. In addition, I volunteered with Seattle Music Partners for two years to teach music to underserved elementary school students in the Seattle Central School District.

My teaching approach consists of one-on-one lessons. I teach oboe lessons, music theory, music history, and general music. Students of all ages and levels welcome.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I have studied ear training at the Academy of Music Northwest and at the University of Washington school of music. I am trained in both moveable-do and fixed-do solfege systems and use these as part of my teaching. I teach harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic dictation in tonal, modulating, and atonal settings.

General Music

I have experience in many areas of music, including composing, conducting, improvising, and playing the piano. In addition to bring proficient in reading music in treble, bass, alto, and tenor clefs, I can sight read and transpose. I have experience teaching basic music skills to elementary school students.

Music History

I am passionate about music history and have studied it at the Academy of Music Northwest, University of Washington, and at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music. I have written program notes for concerts several times and papers about specific topics in music history. I specialize in Baroque, Classical, and Romantic eras, from Bach to Mahler. I have also taken graduate level courses in American music and minimalism.

Oboe

I am co-principal oboist in a Symphony Orchestra in Los Angeles, and I am completing my Masters Degree in oboe performance at the USC Thornton School of Music. I have experience both in performing and in teaching private lessons. I use the Barret Oboe Method book and Ferling etudes as the core of my curriculum. I teach students of all levels, and offer training in preparing for auditions and performances.
