About Jonathan

Bio

Hi,

I'm Jonathan. I've been tutoring the SAT and ACT for high school students from the most elite private schools in the world since 2004. My SAT scores in high school helped me gain admission to Stanford University, where I graduated in 3 years and then completed a Master's degree in 1 year. I've helped write a book about both the SAT and ACT. I've tutored for more than 10,000 hours exclusively on the SAT and ACT. I don't tutor other subjects or for other tests.

SAT and ACT prep is all I do.

I work with a select number of families who recognize the value of investing in the absolute best tutor for their child. My services aren't cheap, but they will cost less than a quarter of the cost of one year's college tuition and can make the difference between going to a lower tier school and one of the top universities in the country.

On average, my students increase their ACT scores by 6.5 composite points and their SAT scores by 220 points (on the new 1600 version). I've had students increase from a 19 to a 32 on the ACT and have had multiple students achieve perfect scores on both exams. There's a secret to my success: I provide the tools for a diligent student to understand these exams, and if they practice using those tools, they'll improve their scores. I am not a magician, so if you're unwilling to put the effort in to implement the strategies I teach, then please don't contact me.

If you're motivated to increase your score, please get in touch and we can work together to help you achieve your goals!

My in-person schedule is about 90% full, so I am primarily looking for students who would like to do online tutoring.

For in-home tutoring, you must reside within 5-8 miles of Brentwood, but I am not able to tutor clients in the Valley due to traffic.

ACT English,

ACT English

The English section is essentially a test of approximately 20 grammar topics that you need to know very well. There are also some tricks and strategies for how to tackle the rhetorical skills questions, which comprise about 1/3 of the 75 questions. Time management and knowing how the test-makers 'think' are also essential to your success on this section. Over the past 12 years of tutoring for the ACT, I've worked with hundreds of students for thousands of hours of one-on-one prep and have helped them increase their ACT English score by as much as 15 points.
ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

If you want to master the Reading section of the ACT, you need to have a tutor who can identify the most effective way for you to approach the passages. The secret is that there is no one-size-fits-all reading strategy for every student. There are a number of possible approaches depending on your particular reading style and the score you are hoping to achieve. You've also got to learn how best to allocate your time on this section. Over the past 12 years of tutoring for the ACT, I've worked with hundreds of students for thousands of hours of one-on-one prep and have helped them increase their ACT Reading scores by as much as 17 points.

Math

ACT Math,

ACT Math

The Math section is a test of both content and your test-taking skills. With only 60 minutes to do 60 questions, you need to know how to allocate your time based on the order of difficulty within the section. There are a number of key formulas to memorize, as well as some fundamental strategies for how to answer questions that can seem difficult but are actually quite straightforward. Over the past 12 years of tutoring for the ACT, I've worked with hundreds of students for thousands of hours of one-on-one prep and have helped them increase their ACT Math scores by as much as 12 points.

Science

ACT Science

ACT Science

Ah, the Science section. It strikes fear into the heart of many students. It is in my opinion the most difficult section, but there are ways to improve your score in this section. You need to know how to scan the data and what to look for within the numerous charts, graphs, tables, and experiments. Practice exams to achieve familiarity with the format of the section is perhaps the most important key to doing well on Science. Over the past 12 years of tutoring for the ACT, I've worked with hundreds of students for thousands of hours of one-on-one prep and have helped them increase their ACT Science scores by as much as 12 points.
