About Heaven

I have always had a love for the Deaf community. Growing up, my favorite aunt was an ASL translator and I loved seeing her come home with her friends, full of expression when they signed together. She is what inspired me to take ASL in High School as my foreign language. Fortunately for me, I was already ahead of the game when I took my first ASL class because my aunt had been teaching me sign since I was in first grade

Because the first year was so easy for me, I decided to take the college course in that year 1 class, where my teacher would give me (and any other students who wanted to take the college course) harder assignments than the rest of the class. I loved being challenged by her lessons and decided to take her class for another two years, as well as taking the college course. This gave me 3 years of college credits from Maricopa Community College by the time I was a Senior in High School. Because there was no ASL year 4 class, my teacher let me help teach her class. She allotted me the responsibility of creating assignments for her year 1 students. On the days I did not teach her class, I would tutor her students after class. So young, I had already known that signing was one of my best skills. On top of that, I conducted my own Deaf fair at Perry High School, and have interpreted the national anthem at my own graduation. Furthermore, I have translated for assemblies held at my school. Nonetheless, I am an Interpreting expert and would love to start teaching others!

After graduating High School, I had wanted to get certified in ASL Interpreting. Instead of starting on that dream right away, I decided to go to school for Visual Communications at FIDM in Downtown Los Angeles. I am a visual learner and a visual teacher deep down. I graduated from FIDM in June of 2016 and am now enrolled at Pierce College to get my certification. Until then, I would love to get back into signing and tutoring. I am still advanced in my signing since I sign with my family, friends, and customers. I would really appreciate the opportunity to help others learn the language, and the opportunity to help bridge the gap from the Hearing community and the Deaf community.

I am willing to cut back hours on my current full time job when I start receiving more requests. Currently, I am the AFA Visual Specialist at a well known boating store. I do love doing their displays, but being able to help others communicate with another community means more to me deep down.

I relate to those first learning the language. I am a patient and helpful teacher. I have had experience teaching young children and teens ASL. I have such a love for signing that I will create a fun learning environment.

I am looking forward to showing you the fun side to learning a new language.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Sign Language

I have taken college courses of ASL for 3 years in High School. By my senior year, I was helping my ASL teacher teach her ASL Year 1 class. I was creating assignments for them and tutoring them on my off days. I have a deep love for American Sign Language and would love to spread my knowledge to more students. I sign as frequently as every other day with my family so I am up to date. I also know the history to most signs and background of how the Deaf overcame being shunned for signing; being able to teach students about deaf culture would also be included in my tutoring.
