About Michael

Hi there, my name's Michael and I'm a tutor living in the Mar Vista area of Los Angeles. Over the course of my academic career I've developed a host of strategies and work ethics in pursuit of good grades and learning. Now that I've graduated from college, I'm ready to start passing on my experience to other young learners to help them get the grades they need and approach tests and the future of college with confidence. I have a strong academic background, graduating as Salutatorian - Summa Cum Laude and AP Scholar with honors from my high school. I made the Head of School list every year and earned special awards in math, physics, theatre, and writing and later graduated Cum Laude from USC as a member of the Alpha Lamda Delta national honor society.

I specialize in helping students grasp new material, complete their homework, study for tests, improve their grades, and prepare for the academic and professional environment of modern college. My main subjects cover the general education students receive in grades up to the end of high school, such as Writing, Math, and Literature. I also specialize in various artistic extracurricular activities, such as animation in Adobe Flash and Video Production.

I interact with my students as a fellow learner, encouraging them to take control of their education as we work together to find what methods work best for them. Mine is a comfortable, friendly, and positive study zone. When working together, I make sure that if a student feels overwhelmed with new material, we take the time to go through each new concept thoroughly until the student feels confident and ready to move on. When tests and finals are on the way, I guide the note-taking and course review process and afterwards, we review the test and reinforce areas that still need work.

My scheduling is very flexible and I am generally available weekdays at any time between 9am and 7pm.

If that sounds good to you, send me a message.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Flash

I began teaching myself to animate in Adobe Flash when I got my first drawing tablet at the beginning of college. After three years of self-learning, I finally had time in my schedule to take an actual university-level animation course, only to find that the artistic and technical skills I had developed had already covered everything the class meant to.

Classics

When I was in college I decided to minor in Classics after having completed two semesters of Latin courses. With my theatrical background already familiarizing me with the Greek and Roman plays, I broadened my knowledge of antiquity with courses on Greek Law, Ancient Epic Literature, and a hearty enthusiasm for Mythology. I am always eager to share my fascination with antiquity with new learners as my professors inspired in me, transforming complicated and intimidating stories like The Iliad and Oedipus Rex into human and accessible roots of modern storytelling.

Study Skills

I am proficient in note-taking, study-guide-completion, and efficient time management and am equipped to share this experience with others in a hands-on and cooperative way that emphasizes diligence and boosts confidence in one's ability to prepare for exams. During my tutoring career I have had lots of experience helping students prepare for tests by guiding their study schedule and areas of emphasis based off of what we agree to be the most important parts of the upcoming exam for them to solidify. I employ a method of explaining assignments and going over past exams based off the feedback of the student indicating their greatest needs. All of these efforts have been met with success and rising grades.

Video Production

As an actor, it has become necessary for me to learn the art of film making. In addition to the artistic side of it, I am well-versed in the technical side of it as well, having much experience in shooting and cutting together both live-action and animated films in programs like Adobe Premiere and Adobe After-Effects. Also, I have taken classes on the subject in high school and in college, such as Digital Production and The Collaborative Process. As a result, I have a couple of YouTube channels full of short films I've worked to shoot and edit over the years and have developed an intuitive and practical approach to film making.
