After earning a B.S. in Physics from Penn State, I studied briefly as a PhD student in particle astrophysics before moving to Shanghai to teach high school physics. I later founded and managed Newton American Education Studio to help prepare Shanghai’s top students to enter and succeed at America's most selective universities. After relocating to the US, I've taught high school math at the prestigious Landon School outside Washington, DC, and am now in Los Angeles, CA where my wife Jenny teaches middle school science and where I am working to finish my PhD.
I have been more than a teacher to my students - many of whom I've stayed in contact with through their years in university and beyond. My over ten years of experience tutoring, teaching, and guiding my students to not only top scores and selective universities but actual conceptual understanding and peace of mind with some complicated subjects gives me the confidence that I can help mentor you likewise. I look forward to a discussion about making a plan that works best for you. My son got off on the wrong foot in Physics this year and had just about convinced himself that he could not get the hang of the subject. In just a few sessions, Michael helped him regain his confidence and strengthened the areas where he was shaky. My son is feeling good about his upcoming semester final, and I could not be happier!
In less than 2 hours, my son went from extremely worried about his AP physics midterm, to confident that he had a solid understanding of the material. We both highly recommend Michael.
Very knowledgeable, very helpful and good at explaining, very east to set up sessions with (accommodating) and was able to tutor last minute on the weekend because I had an exam. great tutor
Best physics tutor I've had, hands down. Very knowledgeable and able to explain every concept in detail. Also very nice and patient and easy to get a hold of.
Michael has been helping me with test prep before major college physics exams for the past semester. Each lesson he demonstrates his mastery of the subject and an admirable level of patience as I am not the quickest learner.
My son had an excellent first session with Michael on AP Calculus. He learned a lot and found Michael very helpful.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught advanced math to my Chinese students in Shanghai! You will score 700+ on SAT Subject Tests or 4+ on the AP and I will get you there.
As a physicist, teacher, and tutor, I have nearly 10 years of experience with differential equations. I have tutored advanced high school students and university students in methods of ordinary and partial differential equations.
I also have 10 years of experience with linear algebra. I have tutored linear algebra to advanced high school students as well as computer science and engineering students at the university level.
I led my Shanghai students to the highest A-Level Physics scores in Asia. No matter if it's AP, IB, SAT, MCAT, or GRE physics, your scores will go up. I've even had normal humans earn perfect scores!
We're not going to just memorize equations! For ten years, I've tutored and taught classes on math and physics in America and abroad. We will work through your pre-calc together. By the end, you'll have a solid math foundation for whatever it is you're trying to do.
For ten years, I've battled the SAT around the world and picked up a lot of "tricks". 150+ on Reading is typical, even for ESL! More is common, even without (completely) blasting you with mind-numbing vocabulary.
