About Jimmy

I have over 17 years of film and photography experience, a BFA in film from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, and I currently work as a professional automotive photographer. I also have an on-going project of capturing street portraits of complete strangers I started three years ago. I currently have over 3000 street portraits and I have no plans of stopping.

I have been working with Photoshop since 2002, as well as the rest of the Adobe creative suite, and I have extensive experience with video editing programs such as Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, and Avid Media Composer. When it comes to camera technology, I've worked with various cinema and still cameras such as RED, Arri Alexa, Canon 5dmk2, 3, 4, Mark 1, Nikon d200, 300, 600, and Panasonic GH4.

When it comes to my teaching style, I'm not a linear-minded person, and so I don't approach the art of learning in a linear fashion. I believe every person learns differently, and can either thrive, or dive, depending on how the information and training is given. Because of that, I believe every every lesson must be tailor-fitted to maximize the outcome of learning, and my ultimate motivation is to make sure the person is interested.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Film

I have a BFA in Film from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA - my specialized discipline was Writing & Directing.

During my journey through film school and after, the works of Stanley Kubrick, Paul Thomas Anderson, Jim Jarmusch, Alexander Payne, Akira Kurosawa, and Steven Spielberg were very personal creative inspirations that have influenced my body of work immensely.

My short films and spec commercials have won 1 Gold Addy, 2 Silver Addys, have been a top ten finalist in the AICP, One Show, and the Tellys.

Photography

I have over 20 years of still photography experience, as well as experience managing a photography studio, a camera rental store, and have assisted numerous other professional photographers.

I have extensive knowledge and experience of various camera brands and technology such as Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, Olympus, Sony, Hasselblad, Mamiya, Phase One, Red, Profoto, Broncolor, Dynalite, as well as photography programs such as Capture One, Lightroom, and last but not least, Photoshop.

I specialize in Automotive, Portraiture, landscapes, night astronomy, time lapses, and street photography.

Video Production

I have worked on over 200 different film projects, ranging from short films, commercials, music videos, Episodic TV, and movies.

When I first started out in the film industry I began in the Art Department, starting as an Art Production Assistant, and then eventually moving up to Set Decorator. I've also worked in Post-Production as a VFX coordinator, and I've worked in the Camera department as a camera operator, cinematographer and DIT, and I'm also currently in the Local 600 Camera Union. I've also worked in the pre-production phases working on creative development.

I also have experience in my own film projects as a writer, director, as well as producer.
