About Erica

I love teaching because I love learning. And learning isn't always fun because you are growing and that can come with challenges. If you had told me when I was growing up that I would go on to earn my masters in journalism, I would have told you that you have the wrong student. I could never just wing it. I always had to study hard to learn something and especially to see positive results. Because of this, not only did I grow to value accomplishment but also the journey in getting there. Helping others enjoy the process as well as the end result is the most inspiring form of education for me to date.

I taught kids with learning disabilities when I was in high school, taught and nannied young children when I was an undergraduate at UCSD and now counsel screenwriters on choices they are making in their writing and their careers. I am a writer and comedian and I believe there's no reason that education can't be fun(ny.)

My undergraduate degree is in communication from UCSD, and my graduate degree is in journalism from USC, where red ink was very familiar to me.

I was the captain of my tennis team in high school that was division 1 and I played all four years.

I am a professional actor and writer. I have studied scene study with Ivana Chubbuck, character work at the Groundlings and am a graduate of UCB. I'm currently in development on a screenplay with Panay Films.

I love helping someone problem solve whether it be on the page or in life. I'm an avid trivia night goer and there's a reason why: making my brain and other brains think is a big passion. Storytelling is a great passion of mine, as are words. And words deserve attention and know how.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have taken both the SAT and GRE and am very proficient with the ACT. I love helping people with test prep as I remember how challenging it was for me.

English

I have a master's in journalism from USC and am a professional writer.

Film

While in graduate school at USC for journalism, I kicked off my experience in film, shooting and releasing a documentary for my thesis. I also produced a 30-min cable access show that aired through Robert Zemeckis' production center. I've written and produced content for Comedy Central. And I've written and produced films that have premiered at festivals worldwide. I'm currently in development on a feature script with Panay FIlms, in conjunction with a first look deal with Relativity.

Tennis

I played tennis from the time I was 5-years-old until 18, participating both in USTA tournaments as well as on my division 1 high school team. I served as the captain of my varsity high school team my senior year.

Theatre

As a professional actor on stage and screen, I have had many years honing my craft. I've was coached by Ivana Chubbuck at her studio, a professional theater that focuses on scene study and on stage performance. I'm a graduate of the UCB theater and have performed on their stage as well as the other well-known comedy theaters around LA. I've cast projects that I've produced that have premiered at festivals worldwide. And as well, I've written for television and am currently in development on a feature film.

Writing

I am a professional writer and earned my master's in journalism. I also currently coach developing writers in screenwriting.
