Pomona College (Cognitive Science)
I am a Ph.D. student at UCLA in the topics of psychology and cognitive neuroscience. As a student and teacher, my passion for learning informs my love of teaching. For me, learning and teaching are two sides of the same page. If I have learned something well, I can teach it to others and help them learn it well. To teach something well, it's important for me to learn how the student thinks and learn how to improve my own teaching.
My primary goals in tutoring are:
1) to keep you challenged while still interested in the material
2) to give you the skills that you need for long-term learning success
3) to encourage curiosity and motivation, especially for what the students themselves find interesting.
I am friendly and easy-going, but I require the student to be serious about their desire to learn. I have a flexible teaching style to accommodate many different ages, as I've tutored a wide range from middle school students to adults. In order for me to teach effectively, it's important for me to learn how you think so that I can tailor my teaching method to meet your needs.
I have been tutoring math for many years, primarily early maths and algebra. For example, I have recently been tutoring small classes in SAT math, as part of Acceso Academy for underprivileged Latino students in LA.
I am also an experienced ESL tutor. I grew up in Thailand, where I taught ESL to Thai children and adults for many years. Since then, I have been tutoring ESL to people of varying ages and native languages. Because I was born and raised in another country, I know very well the difficulties of learning another language (I also speak Spanish and Thai). I am also exceptionally fluent in English, so I can be a huge help for test preparation (such as SAT) or for reading/writing challenges.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you succeed in your studies! I am a Ph.D. student at UCLA in the topics of psychology and cognitive neuroscience. All I can say is that you literally cannot choose a better tutor than him.
I asked him to teach me classes on computer applications to have a general knowledge for my job interviews where they would actually test me on these applications. He is an excellent teacher who knows exactly what and how to teach so that after our last session I felt what a strong general knowledge I gained thanks to his outstanding teaching abilities.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
For the last 6 years (at Duke University, and now at UCLA), I have been using SAS to perform data coding and statistical analyses for behavioral and neuroimaging experiments. Statistical analyses I have conducted using SAS include t-tests, GLM and ANOVA procedures, data reduction techniques (such as Principal Component Analysis or Factor Analysis), and regression procedures. I am a PhD student at UCLA, in the topics of Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience.
I have been an avid soccer player ever since I was a little kid. I played two seasons in high school, as well as on a club team, as a defense position. I've also been regularly playing soccer in local clubs and pickup games. I am particularly skilled at ball control in the air (juggling) and on the ground, passing short-range and long-range, and defense strategies, as well as shooting techniques.
I have been an avid tennis player ever since I started receiving tutoring lessons at age 14. In high school, I played on a double's team for 2 seasons. Since then, I have been playing regularly in my spare time. I am particularly skilled at strong yet accurately placed forehands, backhand spins, and hitting rallies from baseline.
