About Laura

I have two degrees from prestigious universities, Boston University and USC. After spending my twenties as a professional opera singer, singing domestically, and abroad, I discovered my true passion was education and teaching. I have been teaching voice privately for over ten years in the various places I’ve lived. In addition to teaching voice, I was a substitute teacher after completing graduate school in 2007 and am California (CBEST) certified as a substitute teacher of multiple subjects. I currently spend my summers teaching at an innovative operatic training program called OperaWorks, located at California State University, Northridge.

Not only do I have an extensive background in teaching, I have always had a passion for education. English and history were always my favorite subjects in school, perhaps because my mother is an English and history teacher. I excelled in AP English classes in high school and have been published multiple times as a freelance writer. I was valedictorian of the College of Fine Arts at Boston University, graduating summa cum laude, and had straight A’s through graduate school at USC. I even took on doctoral classes for an extra challenge and to get the most out of my education. I am always taking classes to learn something new and I want to awaken and foster a passion for learning in others.

I excelled in school at English and literature, scoring highly on AP and IB tests. I spent years as a substitute teacher for many English classes and have served as a private tutor in the subject as well. Though my degree is in music, I took many English ad literature classes to study the works that inspired the great operas and to make me a more well-rounded student. I am a voracious reader and have a passion for the subject. I am a published writer as well.

I love teaching and infuse education with humor, energy, and sensitivity. I want the experience of learning to be fun and exciting. I am encouraging, patient, experienced, and passionate. Most importantly, I want each student to succeed and develop skills to bolster his/her academic confidence.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Music History

I have a Bachelor and Master's degree education in music. I studied music history in both my undergraduate and graduate programs and was a straight A/summa cum laude student.

Music Theory

Music theory is often the subject musicians dread, but I love to make it fun. I have a Bachelor's and Master's in music and received A's throughout all of my college and graduate theory classes.

Proofreading

I am an experienced and published freelance writer, which requires strong proofreading skills. I also took many classes on writing and proofreading while earning my Master's degree at USC. Cultivating a critical eye for details will benefit students for life.

Reading

I am an experienced freelance writer, voracious reader, certified substitute teacher, and have extensive experience tutoring this subject. I excelled at the AP English and literature tests in high school and received A's in writing and literature classes in college as well.

Accomplished speller with a background in teaching/tutoring/substitute teaching English. Trained in the International Phonetic Alphabet and polylingual. Knowledgable, approachable, and patient tutor — Laura appears to have a very thorough knowledge and practice in music and vocal. Her instruction is traditional as well as intuitive, making her lesson easy to have fun with. She is also very approachable making it easy to ask questions and receive feedback; unlike many music teachers who simply lay down the rules and leave it to the student to understand through practice.
