About Mel

Hello there!

I am Mel, I recently graduated with a Master's degree in Linguistics, with particular focus on TESL. I love teaching!

Last semester I volunteered as an ESL teacher and it was a wonderful experience. It gave me the opportunity to learn from my students how to become a more effective teacher.

Tutoring is a way to get close and personal with the subject: while in class there might be many students, a tutoring session allows the student to ask more questions, and to receive a more personalized lesson.
I have tutored Italian, my native language, at my university for many semesters. As a creative person, I enjoy putting together work sheets and study guides to meet my students' needs in a fun and relatable way.

I have a Master's in Linguistics, took classes focused on ESL testing, and in teaching grammar.
As of July 2016, I hold the CELTA (Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults), which allowed me to improve my teaching method.

If you're feeling like your writing needs improvement, if you feel like you want to have a better mastery of the English language, or you are preparing for an ESL test, feel free to contact me!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

During my graduate studies I heavily focused on phonology/phonetics (pronunciation) and teaching ESL. As a result, I am able to evaluate and work with students from different linguistic backgrounds and help them identify the areas they need the most improvement on.
Recently, I also got certified by the University of Cambridge to teach ESL to adults (CELTA certificate), which gave me the opportunity to work with students at different levels and to create my own lesson plans.
Lastly, I have studied English as a Second Language myself since I was 5. I kept studying ESL in elementary, middle and high school and refined my skills at EF Los Angeles-Education First, a well-known ESL school.
I pursued both my bachelor's and my master's degree here in the States and I have reached native fluency in English.

IELTS

Before entering University, I was required to take the IELTS. I passed it with a band score of 8 (maximum is 9), thus fulfilling my school's requirement of a score of 6.
In my Master's program, I also took a specific course designed to train future ESL teacher to evaluate and understand standardized ESL testing. IELTS, as the second major standardized test after TOEFL, was widely covered and examined.
Furthermore, I can apply my knowledge of Linguistics, in particular phonetics/phonology, and syntax, to better help the student understand and improve his/her performance on the test.

Italian

Italian is my first language. In Italy, we start studying grammar in elementary school and we study it all the way through high school. As a grammar nerd, I love teaching my first language and explaining all the beautiful rules (and many exceptions) to my students. Sometimes I may get lost in a deep explanation as to why Italian has three conjugations, the importance of thematic vowels and the correlation between the present indicative and the passato prossimo... but don't worry! You'll know what I am referring to.
I use my background in Linguistics to my advantage. Having problems pronouncing a certain sound that seems so exotic and foreign? I'll do my best to explain to you how to produce it like a native speaker.
You can't hear the difference betwen "sono" and "sonno"? I'll share some tips on how to hear the double consonants in Italian.

Writing

Writing properly in the key to succeding in your academic endeavors.
I have personally experienced the struggles of undergraduate and graduate student while writing a paper, from trying to come up with a good idea for a paper to polishing the finished product.
Writing is an art: it requires patience, good technique and creativity. I can teach you how to properly use grammar, what words to avoid and how to make your paper sound like a paper, not spoken words.
